Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey's Lake Tahoe and Sierra area fishing report for week of May 11

Hello fellow anglers, well the big kids have had there opening fishing day. Now it is time to the little kids to shine. On June 3-4, the 27th annual Lampe Park Free Kids Fishing derby will kick off the season for 2016. This event is open to all kids ages 3 through 12.

Preregistration is required, Which you can do at the Douglas County Parks Department or Acolades trophies during regular business hours, or at Walgreens in Gardnerville each Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm. The event is not just for our young anglers, it is for the entire family to spend a day together.

This event is put together by volunteers and your donations. I have been proud to be a part of this event for many of those 27 years. Volunteers are always needed in various positions. Fish cleaning, river help, bait and tackle table clean up and set up for the event.

To become a volunteer or if you need information on registration contact Heather Gertcsh at 775-684-9018 or by email at KFDVolunteers@aol.com. For those who would like to become a sponsor or make a donation, you can contact Steve Hamilton at 775-392-3579. Come be a part of the Lampe park Kids Fishing day, by volunteering you get to make a difference in a young anglers life. A great way to get kids hooked on fishing as an alternative to drugs and gangs.

Also a time to share family values. On June 4 at 2:30 p.m.there will be a special needs session. This is open to all age groups with disabilities. There will be volunteers on a one on one basis for the anglers.Preregistration is also required for this session. I do have to work on Saturday, but will be there bright and early Sunday morning.

LAKE TAHOE: Mackinaw action is excellent. Best areas have been Sugar Pine and Dollar points or by the Cal/Neva area. Anglers have been fishing flashers and a minnow in 120 to 250 feet of water. Average fish has been 1 to 6 pounds. Gene St Denis reported a few from 6 to 21 pounds last week. The Cave rock boat launch is open 6 am to 8 pm while the Lake Forest launch is open 5 am to 7 pm and the Sand Harbor launch is closed. Toplining should pick up with warmer temperatures. For more information call Blue Ribbon Fishing Charters at 530-544-6552.

SILVER LAKE: The lake still has ice on it and the boat launch is not open yet for the season. There are many open waters around the shore area for anglers.

CAPLES LAKE: The lake is thawing quickly. The boat launch areas are not open. There is open water by Woods Creek, which brings good fishing this time of year. The dam and the spillway area has some open water areas. With our warmer temperatures the ice should come off faster than expected. For more information call the Caples Lake resort at 209-258-8888.

WOODS LAKE: Closed.

BLUE LAKES: The road is open to the 3rd gate, which is approximately 4.5 miles in to the Faith Valley area.

BURNSIDE LAKE; Closed.

INDIAN CREEK: The campground was scheduled to open last weekend. I have not received a confirmation from BLM as of last Tuesday. Fishing has been fair for shore anglers using power bait or night crawlers. I threw various lures on my last trip and was unsuccessful. While the Powerbait caught me a few fish. For more information call Creekside Lodge at 530-694-2511.

CARSON RIVER EAST AND WEST FORK CALIFORNIA SIDE: Opening day was tough, Renee and I ventured up on Saturday. We started high on the east fork and worked our way down, we caught 2 nice rainbows from 1 to 3 pounds, all were released to catch another day.

Sunday I ventured back up and caught 7 small rainbows with a Panther Martin spinner. I met a couple anglers using mice tails and catch a few small rainbows also. As of last Tuesday the river had raised up and turned to chocolate milk. Last year the east fork at this time was running at 93 Cubic feet per second, last Tuesday it was running at 1400 Cubic feet per second. There are plenty of fish in both rivers, but they are all stuck on the bottom for now. For more information call the Carson River Resort at 530-694-2229.

SILVER CREEK: Waters are running high and muddy but should calm down in a few days.

MARKLEEVILLE CREEK: The water is running high but clearer than the other rivers. Mice tails or night crawlers have been doing fair for small rainbows.

UPPER TRUCKEE RIVER, TAYLOR CREEK, TROUT CREEK: Closed to fishing until July 1, 2016.

NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE FISH PLANTS:
Baily Pond, Martin Slough, Mitch Pond, Hatchery Outponds and Spooner Lake.

Good luck on your next fishing adventure. If you get a picture of your catch send it to jeff@carsonnow.org. If you have a report or a question in our local fishing area call the Naw Line at 775-267-9722. Hope to see you on the waters, Good fishin' and tight lines.
