Fishing Report: Be courteous while boating, ice fishing is fair

Hello fellow anglers, I have to tell you that some boaters still have not taken a boater's safety course, by the actions I witnessed two weeks ago.

Fishing Report: Topaz Opener enjoyed by all, tips for ice fishing on our regional lakes

Hello fellow anglers! As we welcomed in 2021, many anglers ascended on Topaz Lake to bring in the new year. I and fellow angler Tom Blotter were amongst the many.

At 6 a.m. Tom and I were on the lake waiting for the official start time. There was an eerie fog-like mist lingering over the lake. It was a cool 18 degrees, and the winds were calm. Our first line went into the water at 6:33 a.m. and the first strike came at 7 a.m.

Fishing Report: Stay safe while ice fishing and prepare for longer days to begin on the solstice

Hello fellow anglers. A very Happy Fishmas to you all. The weather is finally changing into winter coldness, but hopefully we will get some precipitation to boost up our snow pack for a long spring and summer runoff and a good fishing experience for 2021.

Hello fellow anglers. I hope your holidays are starting off good, and you had a safe Thanksgiving with family and friends. Renee and I stayed home and connected with family and friends via text or telephone. I am slowly coming into the 21st century of technology, but fishing will always be old school in my book.

Fishing Report: Pyramid Lake to open for the season Nov. 2 while other lakes shut down for winter

Hello fellow anglers. In only a couple weeks time, we are going from fall to winter (but only briefly and then right back to fall). Still, it is a stern reminder that winter is right around the corner.

Last weekend, Renee and I fished the Truckee River with a friend. At 7 a.m. we were wearing flannels and jackets, by noon, we were back in tee shirts.

The fishing was very slow, but we did manage a few small rainbows to take our lures.

Fishing Report: Fish are still biting despite lower lake levels, river clean up planned for Oct. 17

Hello fellow anglers, Fall is definitely here. Renee and I took a trip through Alpine County last week to enjoy the fall colors. Many trees have turned, while others are just starting to get their true colors.

To get a good look at the viewing, venture up through Highway 88 from Woodfords to Caples Lake. Another good area of fall color viewing is from Woodfords on Highway 89 up to Kinney reservoir on Highway 4 .

Fishing Report: Fish plants are abundant, just in time for Free Admission to Nevada State Parks

Hello fellow anglers. Just got back from Oregon a few weeks ago and the world’s getting a little crazy. It's now fall, and it feels like we missed out on most of summer, between COVID-19 and wildfires, we might have to start doing some praying to get back to some sense of normalcy. We encountered 7 wildfires on our journey.

Pine Nuts with McAvoy Layne: Gutsy lady's sacrifice earns her a seafood gumbo dinner and drinks

This morning I read a most compelling article in the New York Times by one of my favorite journalists, Helene Cooper. Customarily, as the Times' Pentagon correspondent, Ms. Cooper writes about guns and butter, but knowing she was on a team awarded a Pulitzer for coverage of the Ebola epidemic, her piece of today (Sept. 12, 2020) carried much weight with me.

Pine Nuts with McAvoy Layne: Pandemic solitude has its own unique personality

Solitude is an essential component to good health and well-being, so they say, but too much solitude, let me tell you, can be burdensome. I cite solitary confinement as the cruelest of punishments. Washing ashore onto deserted Island is considered by most to be an unfortunate turn of fate. But pandemic solitude has its own unique personality.

Fishing Report: Despite the heat, fish are being reeled in throughout the region

Hello fellow anglers, It has been so dang hot that not many have been out fishing lately. With all of this heat, a couple reminders to those that venture outdoors: Beware of the rattlesnakes while you're hiking to that favorite fishing hole. Rattlesnakes are not just in the Carson Valley area, they can be found all the way up through the sierras high up as Kinney reservoir. So watch your step.

Hello, if I may introduce myself, my name is Ovi, I'm a Covid virus who has learned English and am about to publish a tell-all book about my life as a Covid virus who has gone to the other side. Humans think we don't have brains, but we do. We disguise our brains as effluent, and with the help of 20-200 vision, we can spot a impaired immune system from across a crowded room.

Don't you love pithy quotes? Me too. I have a plug hat full of them, and I pull one out every now and again to give myself a lift. So I thought I'd share a few of them with you here today in this fine family journal, and hope that one of them might give you a lift too.

Fishing Report for Fourth of July Weekend, remember to practice Social Fishtancing

Hello fellow anglers. It is the fourth of July weekend and many areas have opened up for camping and fishing in our area. Due to extreme fire danger, campfires are only allowed in a designated camp area. This does not mean a nice place on the side of the road under the trees or next to a lake or river. If you are caught with an illegal campfire, you may have to make a donation (fine or ticket ) to your local government agency.
