Senator Square: Spring break arrives for Carson City School District

Students in Carson City School District are on spring break this coming week. School resumes on Monday, April 13. The week that they return from break will be extremely busy for leadership students, as they will be decorating for three major events to be held April 16, 17, and 18.

Community members 50 and older are invited to the Senior/Senior Friendship Ball/Prom to be held on Thursday, the 16th in the gymnasium of CHS. Entry to this event is free to the community. On April 17, CHS clubs will be hosting the first ever Father-Daughter Cinderella Ball in the gymnasium of CHS. Tickets to this event are $25 for two and an additional $5 for each additional princess dad brings to the dance. Tickets can be purchased on Tuesday at CHS attendance office from 8 am to 2 pm.

Contact Angila Golik for more information at 775-781-5829. Finally, on Saturday, April 18, CHS seniors and their guests are invited to the annual CHS Prom. Prom tickets can be purchased from the student finance office for $35 each. This year’s theme is Masquerade Ball. The dance is from 7 pm to 11 pm. State Speech Competition
Carson High School Speech and Debate competed in the National Qualifier tournament held at Bishop Manogue March 26-28. The state capital will be well represented at the National Tournament this June in Dallas. Of 19 entries, 16 Carson students advanced into Saturday competition in the double elimination based event.

Emily Spence, Juliet Favero, and Evan Allred all advanced to the semi-final round of Dramatic Interpretation at the tournament.  Cristina Rodriquez placed 6th overall in Original Oratory for her speech on teen sleep deprivation in her final appearance before graduating. Captains Jacob Bertocchi and Luke Szatmary placed 3rd overall in Duo Interpretation with their cutting of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail".

Shane Morton qualified to compete at the National Tournament in Humorous Interpretation with his cutting of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee." Shaylin Segura dominated Lincoln Douglas Debate in her national qualifying performance and was the last undefeated competitor out of a field of 30 in the tournament.

As a team, Carson owned Congressional debate, claiming the overall sweepstakes award in the event. Duy Khanh Nguyen, Allesandro Figueroa, Sadie Share, and Jacob Bertocchi all placed in the top six in their respective Congress chambers. Allesandro, Sadie, and Jacob all qualified to compete at Nationals.

Out of 17 schools from Northern Nevada competing at the tournament only four students qualify to compete in Congress, and Carson took 3 of the spots. The team now begins to develop not only their national cases but fundraisers to cover travel and competition expenses. If you’d like to help this group of kids go to nationals, please contact their advisor Patrick Mobley at pmobley@carson.k12.nv.us.

History Day Fundraiser
Help support CHS students Kailee Gordon, Sarah Theile, and Katie Jones to Washington, D.C. for National History Day National Competition. They are in need of your spring cleaning items from your garage and home for a rummage sale. Instead of throwing it out, please consider donating it to these girls for the community garage sale that is going to be held on April 25 at the north parking lot of Carson High School. Please call 775-883-1066 to arrange for the girls to pick up your donated items. They need all donations by April 23 so that they can organize and price items for the Saturday sale. Thank you.

NHS Polar Plunge
(Submitted by NHS Historian Nick Rosen) The Carson High NHS chapter raised money and took part in the recent polar plunge held at Lake Tahoe. The club raised a total of $1,133 for Special Olympics athletes in which $320 of it came from a miracle minute fundraiser, held during school in which students donated change spare change. Eighteen students and faculty from CHS took part in the event itself on March 21. Way to go National Honor Society students.

Senior Spotlight
This week the Senior Spotlight is on Amanda Breen. Amanda has a GPA of 4.16 and is carrying many AP and Honors classes for her senior year. She has been a Link Crew Leader the last two years. This year she is a Link Crew Director. She has been a Skills USA Chapter President for the last two years and previously she was the Nevada State Officer for Skills USA.
