Christmas Extravaganza in Carson City to benefit local family
Northern Nevada HotSpot owner Cassidy Davis originally envisioned this weekend’s Christmas Shopping Extravaganza event at the Fuji Park Exhibition Hall in South Carson City as promoting the concept of shop local, buy local.
“Shopping local is important, because that creates jobs, supports local men and women who own businesses, and it helps to build and secure our economy’s future,” she said. “It keeps our hard-earned money right here in Northern Nevada.”
But then the unthinkable happened to a local Northern Nevada family on Oct. 3, and Davis’ charitable organization went into high gear to help.
Faith, Hope, Love of Northern Nevada came to the aid of J.J. Hubbard and his family following a motorcycle accident that left the family patriarch with numerous broken bones to the face and a severe brain injury, Davis said.
Hubbard has undergone major reconstructive surgery to repair his face and will require more, Davis said. The long-term effects of the brain injury are unknown at this time.
She said Hubbard had lost his job just before the accident and is losing his health insurance.
Now this weekend’s Christmas Shopping Extravaganza has another purpose: To help a local family in need.
“We would like to raise $2,000 for J.J. at this event,” Davis said.
Helping the Hubbard family is at the heart of what this Christmas event is really all about, she said.
“The inspiration behind the event is to bring local Christmas shopping to the Carson City community, and to help those in need,” she said.
The inaugural Christmas Shopping Extravaganza spans two days — Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3-4 — at the Fuji Park Exhibition Hall, and includes free admission to about 40 local vendors, food and baked goods, live DJ Christmas music, a children’s craft station making a pine cone Christmas ornament, face painting, raffles and door prizes.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.
Santa Claus himself — dressed in his classical Victorian finery — will also be on hand for free photos with children and their families. Shoppers should plan on bringing their own cameras for photos with Saint Nick, who will be available from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday and all day Sunday.
Davis said all of the proceeds collected from the big raffle will go directly to the Hubbard family to help them with their expenses.
