Carson City sheriff’s log: Operation on Highway 50 leads to multiple drug arrests

A traffic infraction interdiction operation on Highway 50 West and Golf Club Drive conducted Friday by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team and the Tri-County Gang Unit resulted in a number of drug-related arrests, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Traffic stops were made by law officers for instances of speeding, not having license plates, expired registration and failure to stop at stop signs. The following arrests were made:

A 27-year-old Gardnerville man, Jesse Leeper, was arrested Friday, 4:31 p.m. in the area of Golf Club Drive and Highway 50 West for felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, possession of a dangerous drug, and misdemeanor charges of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, no insurance and failure to stop at a stop sign.

According to the arrest report, deputies made a traffic stop after the driver failed to stop at a stop sign. Deputies made contact with the driver, who was not able to provide current proof of vehicle insurance. The officer asked if he had any drugs or weapons in the vehicle. The man stated no and allowed the officer to search him. During the search the officer found a rolled piece of tin foil drug paraphernalia.

The officer asked the man how long he had been using heroin and the man replied with swear words, according to the arrest report. He was asked the last time he used heroin and the man said that morning, advising there was a “tooter straw” in the vehicle console. A tooter straw is a plastic pen used to smoke and inhale narcotics on tinfoil.

A canine did an exterior sniff of the vehicle and alerted to drugs. Officers found the tooter straw, multiple sheets of tinfoil with black burnt residue presumed to be heroin, two small plastic baggies with presumed heroin residue. In the trunk officers found a glass jar with marijuana, and two Suboxone patches, which can only be obtained through a prescription. The man could not provided a doctor’s prescription. Bail: $7,703.

The vehicle was stopped for not stopping at a posted stop sign, not having a front license plate and for having a broken windshield across the driver’s view. A canine alerted positive for drugs on the exterior of the vehicle. Inside the car deputies found 3.5 grams of marijuana, marijuana grinders, and three empty plastic containers with marijuana residue. Bail: $3,130.
