Outdoors with Don Q: Two fishing derbies in the region

If you are a serious fisherman and are interested in winning some money, be advised that there are not one, but two fishing derbies coming up in the very near future in this area.

One of the derbies is the Lake Davis (California) Spring Fishing Derby which will be held on Saturday, June 15.
The other one is a "Wide Open" Derby which will be held at Topaz Lake on Saturday-Sunday, June 15-16.

If you're interested, here is some information on both derbies:

Lake Davis Spring Fishing Derby:
It is on Saturday, June 15 and is a fund raiser for the Eastern Plumas Rural Fire Protection District, water rescue equipment.

Derby Headquarters will be held at J & J's Grizzly Store and Camping Resort on the south end of Davis Lake.
Pre-registration is $20 for adults and $10 for juniors (under the age of 16).
Registration on the day of the derby is $25 for adults.
Register until 12:00 noon on Friday, June 14 at the following locations:
In Portola: K&S Market, Leonard's Market, Firehouse Thrift Store and Value-Wide Discount Store.
In Graeagle: Graeagle Frostee.

Register until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 14 at J & J's Grizzly Store.
Register on the day of the derby at J & J's Grizzly Store or at the Honker Cove Boat Ramp on the east side of Davis Lake.

The derby categories are: Adults, Juniors (under 16) and Dad and Me.
Trophies, money and next year's entry fees will be awarded in each category.
This event is under the authority of a special use permit granted by the Plumas National Forest, Beckwourth Ranger District.

For the derby entry form, go to www.graeagleplumas.com/springderby.html.
For information, call Jeanne Graham at (530) 832-0270.

"Wide-Open" Fishing Derby:
It is on Saturday and Sunday, June 15 and 16 at Topaz Lake and it is sponsored by the Sierra Nevada Bass Club.
It actually is the first of two derbies, one at Topaz Lake and the other one to be held at Lake Almanor, California on Saturday, July 13.

The format for these two derbies is your single best fish for each day - be it a trout species or black bass species.

Prizes based on 100 entrants are: $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place for biggest trout and biggest bass.

If you sign up for either Wide-Open, you may also join the Sierra Nevada Bass Club for half-price for the remainder of 2013.

The club hosts 10 Black Bass Tournaments each year at such locations as Lake Almanor, Antelope Lake, Bullards Bar, the California Delta, Clear Lake, Folsom Lake, Orville Lake and Shasta Lake.

The club's monthly meetings are held typically on the first Thursday of each month at Scheels Sporting Goods Store in Sparks, plus a hosted annual awards dinner party in Carson City.

For a complete set of derby rules and for information, call (775) 443-5728 or go to www.nvbass.com or email: director.snbc@charter.net.

If you're interested in the Topaz Lake derby, the entry fee is $50.
If you're interested in the Lake Almanor derby, the entry fee is $50.
The 2013 half-price to join the Sierra Nevada Bass Club is $25.

Special Note: At Topaz Lake, all boats must have a 2013 Nevada Invasive Species Boat Decal. Additionally, anglers must have a valid California fishing license or a valid Nevada fishing license with a Nevada Trout Stamp.

Finally:
If you are interested in winning some big money, I would suggest that you enter the "Wide Open" Derby on June 15-16 at Topaz Lake.
With a combination of skill and luck, you could be walking around with a big smile on your face and lots of cash in your pocket.

Bet Your Favorite Pigeon
Bet your favorite pigeon that he can't tell you who is the Director of the Sierra Nevada Bass Club.
If he grins and says, "It is Ried Bridges," you lose this bet.
