Carson City man jailed after victim sets up sting to recover stolen saw found on social media

A 39-year-old Carson City man was arrested Tuesday for felony suspicion of possession of stolen property and obtaining money under false pretenses after allegedly selling a saw to the victim of a burglary after the victim discovered the equipment for sale on a social media site, a sheriff's deputy said.

Deputies arrested Patrick Haselberger at 4:59 p.m. in the 2700 block of South Carson Street. According to the arrest report, deputies investigating a burglary involving stolen tools and construction equipment on Monday were notified by the victim that he found several stolen items posted for sale on a Facebook page and on Haselberger's Facebook page, including a Milwaukee brand saw, which had the victim's name engraved on the box.

The victim contacted Haselberger and they agreed to meet at a motel where the victim agreed to buy the saw for $50. The victim then contacted dispatch and requested a deputy to stand by, according to the arrest report.

Upon arrival the deputy observed Haselberger handing the victim the saw and taking money from him. When the suspect saw the sheriff's office patrol vehicle he immediately turned away and began walking quickly out of the area.

The victim waved the officer down and the suspect, Haselberger, was stopped. The suspect was in possession of a large knife on his belt. The officer asked him to sit. He was also holding the $50 in cash he had received from the victim, the arrest report states.

Deputies met with the victim who explained the events of the previous evening and stated he found Haselberger's Facebook ad, attempting to sell his saw that had been stolen. When the transaction was made, he observed the saw with his name clearly engraved on the side. Deputies observed the victim's name on the side of the saw box.

Haselberger was read his Miranda warning and agreed to speak. He stated the saw was his and he had owned it for a long time. Haselberger initially said the $50 was his and he did not get it from the victim. A deputy placed Haselberger into custody for possession of stolen property and obtaining money under false pretenses.

The victim explained that Haselberger had several items posted for sale on his Facebook page but was told by the suspect that the saw was the only item left to buy, the report states.

Deputies interviewed Haselberger again and confronted him about the evidence against him. The suspect insisted he owned the saw for months. The officer informed him he observed the box was clearly marked with the victim's name.

Haselberger proceeded to say the saw was his and the victim could not prove it otherwise because he did not have a receipt. The suspect then made multiple comments about turning in the people responsible, however he did not know names or where they could be located, the arrest report states.

The victim's property was returned to him. The deputy took Haselberger to jail where he eventually told the officer he knew the saw was stolen and bought it two days ago for a pack of cigarettes and $20 from a man named "Jack." He told the deputy he knew it was messed up to sell the stolen item but he needed the money. He was booked without incident. Total bail amount listed for the two charges: $45,000.

In other arrests:
— A 56-year-old Idaho man, Daryl Eugene Pickard, was arrested Tuesday for suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon and three misdemeanors: battery, destruction of property and a warrant out of Elko County.

According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched the the area of Executive Point Way regarding a man who had destroyed property inside a business and brandished a knife at employees. Dispatch advised the man, later identified as Pickard, left the scene and began to walk toward a church.

A deputy located the man attempting to walk toward the front door of a Bryan Circle residence. Pickard was detained. The homeowner stated the man did not live there. The deputy did a wants and warrants check on Pickard, which returned with an extraditable warrant out of Elko County. He was placed into custody for the warrant.

The suspect was identified by the reporting party (RP) as the person who brandished the knife. The RP stated the man walked into the business and began to yell at employees saying he was the owner of the business. The employees had never seen the man before. It was learned the man allegedly drew a black knife with a serrated blade from his pocket and made a lunging motion toward the victim with the knife in his hand, and could have easily stabbed or slashed him, the report states.

The suspect also allegedly shoved another employee after he got "nose to nose" with him, the report states. The knife was located and positively identified along with other property the man threw on the ground outside the business. Deputies learned as the suspect was exiting the building, he smashed the alarm system on the wall, causing $200 to $300 in damages to repair.

Pickard was taken to Carson City Jail and booked for the charges. Bail amount listed: $22,445.

— A 45-year-old Carson City woman, Perla Garcia, was arrested Tuesday, 2:40 a.m. in the 1800 block of North Edmonds for suspicion of felony destruction of property ($5,000 or more), DUI first offense, hit and run causing property damage, driving without a valid license and a Department of Alternative Sentencing violation.

According to the arrest report, deputies were called to a casino on Highway 50 East where a witness stated that the suspect had crashed into the southeast door of the casino and left the scene. The witness gave a description of the vehicle.

As deputies were investigating the incident, a Carson City Sheriff's Office sergeant located the vehicle going north on north Edmonds Drive. The sergeant observed rear end damage to the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop, which was made at a casino across the street from the casino where the vehicle had damaged the door.

A deputy took over the investigation, observing the vehicle had damage. The officer asked the woman what happened. She said she didn't know what happened. The officer could smell an odor of alcohol on her person and her eyes were red and watery. The woman was asked if she had anything to drink. She stated one beer around 10 p.m. the night prior.

She agreed to participate in field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment on the tests. She was unable to perform the walk and turn and one leg stand due to almost falling over, the arrest report states. She was given several attempts to provide a preliminary breath test but was unsuccessful in providing a sample and instead agreed to an evidentiary blood draw.

The witness arrived and confirmed the SUV was the same one he saw crash into the casino and left the scene. Video surveillance from the casino showed the SUV was the same one the woman was driving. She was arrested on the above charges. Dispatch advised the woman was on Alternative Sentencing with a "no alcohol" clause.

The woman refused to get into the back of the patrol car. She was physically lifted into the vehicle. When officers arrived at the jail the woman had slipped her right wrist out of the handcuffs and refused to get out of the patrol car. The arresting officer and jail deputies had to physically carry the woman into the intake cell at jail.

At that point, the officer believed the woman was not in the right state of mind when she had earlier consented to a blood draw. The deputy contacted the district attorney's office to request a warrant for a blood draw. During this time, the woman became unconscious but still breathing. Carson City Fire Department transported the woman to the hospital, the arrest report states.

At the hospital a telephonic search warrant was granted. She was medically cleared from the hospital and taken back to jail. Total bail amount listed: $10,103.

— A 28-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Wednesday morning for suspicion of domestic battery and a violation of suspended sentence warrant.

According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to a motel in the 200 block of West Caroline Street in reference to a domestic battery between a male and female.

Deputies arrived and spoke with the victim who said her husband had been drinking all night and the two began arguing after he had received a phone call. She stated the two argued and he became physically aggressive with her. She said the man bit her on the right arm, leaving a mark. She said she walked out of the room and called 911.

A deputy investigating was able to see a fresh red mark on the victim's right arm in the form of an oval shape, with visible teeth marks cutting into the skin. The deputy asked the woman if she had any other marks or injuries on her body and the woman reported she did not and declined medical attention. Deputies took photos of the bite mark for evidence purposes.

The suspect was found hiding in the bathroom and tried to avoid deputies but eventually came out. He was taken outside of the room to speak. He appeared intoxicated and had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath. He refused to speak and, while standing, was losing his balance due to impairment. He was arrested for suspicion of domestic battery and a violation of suspended sentence warrant issued in March of this year. Bail: $4,137.

— A 30-year-old Carson City man, Nicholas Vest, was arrested early Wednesday, 5:06 a.m. in the 1300 block of North Carson Street for felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

Deputies involved in an investigation regarding a separate stolen property case were at the residence to conduct a followup. Officers met with Vest at the front door of the room. Deputies asked if they could search his hotel room. The man consented and allowed deputies inside. Officers located a methamphetamine pipe with a trace amount of methamphetamine inside. He was arrested. Bail: $3,637.
