Suspicious package found in bushes at Carson City Sheriff's Office prompts bomb squad response, street closures

UPDATE 4:17PM: A suspicious bag has been removed and the area is deemed safe, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. All personnel are returning to the sheriff's office. The Courthouse remains closed to the public. One bag contained an assortment of belongings, with an item considered suspicious and taken apart by Tahoe Douglas Bomb Squad, which then declared the area safe. The matter has been turned over to CCSO.

UPDATE 2:35PM: The Carson City Sheriff's Office will be closed Wednesday until further notice. A suspicious package was found in the vicinity just after 1 p.m. East Musser Street and surrounding streets are closed until further notice. Tahoe Douglas Bomb Squad is on scene.
The Carson City Courthouse is closed for the remainder of the day. For hearings or check-ins call the correct court tomorrow. Further details will be released from the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, standby.

Man sentenced to 34 years in prison in Carson City's first convicted hate crime

Travis Mickelson, a Dayton resident, was sentenced to 11 to 34 years in prison Thursday in Carson City District Court in what was tried and prosecuted as Carson City's first hate crime.

In November of 2018, Mickelson was convicted by a jury in Judge James Russell's court of attempted murder with hate crime enhancements, as well as battery and assault with a deadly weapon.

Carson City municipal offices, courts closed

UPDATE: 9:15AM: Carson City municipal offices are now closed, according to Carson City Deputy Emergency Manager Stacey Belt.
"Due to weather and road conditions, the Carson City Manager and Mayor have closed all local Carson City offices, Friday March 16," she said.
The Clerk Recorders office at 885 East Musser Street will remain open for final day election candidate filings.
