Snow arrives at Lake Tahoe in time for ski and travel journalist conference
Travel and ski journalists from national magazines, newspapers, websites, blogs and social media outlets will arrive at South Lake Tahoe next week and be greeted with several feet of fresh snow during the North American Snowsports Journalist Association National Conference.
The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority will host 75 journalists and guests March 5-9 to showcase the region and provide attendees an authentic flavor for the area, its residents and the activities that make Lake Tahoe a national treasure. The event is designed to generate significant editorial coverage for the area as a leading winter destination.
Established in 1963, first as the United States Ski Writers Association, the North American Snowsports Journalists Association is a professional group of more than 250 writers, authors, photographers, filmmakers and broadcasters who report ski- and snowboard-related news, information and features throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico, via the various media. Members attending this conference represent the Associated Press, SKI Magazine, Snow.com, San Francisco Chronicle, Sacramento Bee, Examiner.com, 7x7 Magazine, San Jose Mercury News, LA Daily Breeze, Contra Costa Times, Trenton (New Jersey) Times and NJ.com.
“The NASJA conference is an effective way to provide media ‘wild side’ experiences that differentiate the Tahoe South brand from other ski destinations,” said Carol Chaplin, executive director, Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “Results will be significant coverage of our resort community through newspaper, magazine and website content.”
In addition to overall destination stories, updates on major plans that will affect the future of Tahoe South and the entire area will be provided. Brian Krolicki, Lieutenant Governor of Nevada, will discuss the 2022 Reno/Tahoe Winter Olympics bid; Mike Bradford, Chief Executive Officer at Lakeside Inn and Casino will provide an overview of the South Shore Vision Plan; Carl Hasty, District Manager, Tahoe Transportation District, will cover the US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project.
Milena Regos, a Certified Social Media Marketer and principal of Out&About Marketing, a digital and social media firm, will conduct a professional development seminar for media on integrating social media to connect, engage and build online communities.
Journalists will also be provided story ideas regarding local personalities, residents and information on area sustainability, geo-tourism and environmental issues.
LTVA has organized five days of tour options including skiing and boarding at South Shore resorts: Heavenly Mountain Resort, Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort; snowmobiling at Zephyr Cove Resort; an apres ski cruise on the Tahoe Queen; live entertainment with 311, an alternative-rock group at MontBleu, and comedy at the Improv at Harveys; time to explore shops and galleries at the Heavenly Village; as well as gaming opportunities.
NASJA attendees will be staying at Embassy Suites Lake Tahoe Hotel & Ski Resort, Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, Harveys Lake Tahoe, MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa, and Tahoe Lakeshore Lodge & Spa. Throughout their stay the group will be utilizing transportation via BlueGo, South Tahoe Express and Amador Stage Lines.
An opening night reception at Edgewood Tahoe will include an overview presentation of the area from the LTVA and a welcome from the evening’s sponsor, Sacramento International Airport, followed by a Taste of Tahoe with local restaurant samplings from favorites like Edgewood, Blue Angel Café, Freshies Restaurant & Bar, Lakeside Inn & Casino’s Latin Soul, Red Hut Café, along with El Dorado wineries: Boegar and Madrona.
Evening activities throughout the week will include a lakefront dinner at The Beacon and final night marketplace/trade show and awards banquet at Harveys sponsored by Reno-Tahoe International Airport. In addition to skiing and riding, day time options include snowmobile rides offered by Zephyr Cove Resort, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Camp Richardson Historic Resort & Marina, and a dash through the snow on a Borges Sleigh ride.
Additional conference sponsors and partners include Nevada Commission on Tourism, Heavenly Sports, Ski Butlers, Stateline Brewery and Tahoe Trail Bars.
