Nevada Artists Association donates $1,500 to Boys and Girls Club for children's art programs
On Thursday morning, the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada was presented with a donation of $1,500 by the Nevada Artist’s Association to help with the cost of art programs at the club.
The Nevada Artists Association, located at 449 West King Street in the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City, is a 501c6 non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and advancing art to be shared with the community.
The Association first formed in 1950, and last year they celebrated their 40th anniversary of opening the fine art gallery at the Brewery Arts Center.
Katie Leao, chief professional officer of the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada, received the donation and check at the gallery Thursday morning, and is grateful to have community partnerships that encourage art at the club.
“The one thing we do with partnerships is leverage programs kids love,” said Leao. “Through our partnerships, teens have done volunteer work, learned about art through different forms; the teens love it, and they also learn what organizations do for us and why it’s important to give back in their own community.”
But it isn’t only the teens that benefit, Leao says.
“For the little ones, it’s art, and it’s how they can learn to express themselves. They might not be able to do it in the schools as much anymore, and we believe art should be valued and we value it. Art is one of the most popular programs at the club.”
Deborah Foster, who is a local artist and a member of the Nevada Artists Association Board, knew the Boys and Girls Club would benefit from the donation.
“It’s important for us to donate for children’s art programs because children are our future members,” said Foster. “We want to encourage younger people to be creative and when they’re old enough, to join.”
The Association’s youngest artist is a 13-year-old, said Foster, who came in at 11 and loved the gallery, but wasn’t old enough to join. He saved his money for two years and when he turned thirteen, he was able to become a member.
“There aren’t many art programs in Carson City that can really benefit children, so we knew the Boys and Girls Club would be a great fit for the donations,” said Foster.
This will be the first time the Association has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club, said Foster, and they used all of the donations they raised during the previous year, which celebrated the 40th anniversary of the gallery’s opening at the BAC, to give to the club.
“We’re looking forward to see how the money is spent on art programming,” said Foster. “There will be a student show (at the Boys and Girls Club) in the next few months, and we’re excited to see what they will present.”
The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
