Symposium to highlight social media uses
The Carson City Visitors Bureau is hosting a Social Media Symposium for rural marketing and tourism organizations in the state.
“It’s an opportunity for the marketing community to come together,” said Kyle Horvath, social media director for the visitors bureau. “It’s a place people can feel comfortable to bounce ideas off each other and learn from others’ mistakes.”
The symposium will begin at 9 a.m. Dec. 5 and 6 at the Adams Hub for Innovation, 111 W. Proctor St.
It will feature speakers on a variety of topics, including blogging, uses for Twitter, user-generated content, writing effective press releases, best practices and marketing on social media.
“I want to break down the fear for a lot of those people who are doing traditional marketing but may be unsure about social media,” Horvath said. “A lot of people are comfortable in their expertise in marketing, but not a lot know how to put it all together with the new tool that is social media.” Horvath said social media allows marketers to interact with their audience on a more personal level.
“I see social media less as a giant megaphone and more as a digital community and conversation,” he said.
The symposium is free for marketers and tourism officials from the rural areas. Lunch will be provided Friday.
A discount will be offered at the Gold Dust West for attendees who mention the symposium.
Attendees are invited to attend the annual Silver and Snowflakes Festival, featuring the tree-lighting ceremony and other activities, in downtown Carson City at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 5.
“Participants can practice their new skills there,” Horvath said. To register for the symposium or for more information, go to visitcarsoncity.com.
