Carson City, western Nevada and Lake Tahoe region welcomes first snow of the season
A much welcomed blanket of snow fell over the Carson City, western Nevada and Lake Tahoe areas overnight, giving way to the first snowfall of the season and a relief for the much-needed precipitation in our parched climate.
The National Weather Service issued Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 10 this morning for the Lake Tahoe area and western Nevada. After all is said and done forecasters say we can see anywhere from 2 to 8 inches on the valley floors and 6 inches to nearly a foot in the foothills and Sierra.
Around the capital city, Carson City Public Works has its snow removal equipment out in force around town, as does Douglas County and Lyon County. The Nevada Department of Transportation is keeping highways and the freeway clear for continued weekend traffic.
Motorists are advised to they can expect slippery road conditions and poor visibility with periods of moderate to heavy snow continuing this morning.
Even light snowfall causes major travel delays, especially during periods of high traffic volume. NDOT advises to allow extra time to reach your destination. Leave extra space between vehicles since it takes longer to stop on slick roadways.
Updated state road conditions, including winter road closures and incidents, are available by dialing “511” or logging on to nvroads.com before driving. Drivers can also view live traffic cameras and sign up for free traffic alerts for their state road commute.
Here's some things to remember
— Remove snow and ice from all vehicle windows, mirrors and lights prior to driving
— Only travel in winter weather when absolutely necessary, and leave early to provide enough time to safely reach your destination
— Slow down on winter roads: speed limits are based on road and weather conditions
— Keep a safe distance from other vehicles
— Watch carefully for snow removal equipment
— Use extra caution on bridges and ramps, as they may be icy
Check before you go:
Tires, brakes, lights, battery, wipers, defroster, heater and vehicle fluid levels
Carry with you:
Tire chains, flashlight, ice scraper, snow shovel, first-aid supplies, extra clothing and gloves, blanket, flares and non-perishable food and water.
