Carson City arrests: Video shows man stealing cash from fast food drive-through register

A 34-year-old man was arrested early Sunday in the 300 block of East William Street for suspicion of felony burglary after allegedly stealing cash from a drive-through window at a fast food restaurant, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

Kolby Blayne Fair, listed from Sacramento, was taken into custody at 4:10 a.m. According to the arrest report, deputies were called to a fast food restaurant after a report that a suspect had taken money from the drive-through cash drawer. Dispatch advised a suspect vehicle was in the drive-through.

On arrival, deputies made contact with the suspect, who was walking through the parking lot, and detained him. Deputies made contact with three females who had been with the suspect in a vehicle prior to the incident. Deputies also made contact with witnesses.

Through the investigation, deputies learned the suspect was left alone in the vehicle with one other female. Three females exited the vehicle to meet with someone in the parking lot. When they returned, the vehicle was unoccupied and someone told them on the speaker the drive-through was closed for security reasons, the arrest report states.

Suspect Fair was read his Miranda warning and repeated that he knew his 5th Amendment right, the arrest report states. The female who was left with the suspect told officers the suspect exited the vehicle, walked to the drive-through, returned, showed her money and told her they had to leave, the arrest report states. The female told deputies she was scared and didn't want to get into trouble and left.

Deputies also reviewed video footage of the incident that showed an employee leave the drive-through window to bag up an order. The suspect, Fair, in the video walked up to the drive-through window and grabbed the credit card machine. It shows him pressing buttons on the machine and then reaching his left hand and his upper body into the drive-through window inside the store, the arrest report states.

With the upper half of his body now inside the store, he is seen pressing random buttons on the cash register touch screen. While pressing the random buttons, the cash drawer opened. He is seen reaching into the cash drawer and taking, what was later determined to be $40, and then leaving, the report states.

Due to suspect Fair matching the video surveillance and observing him taking money from the cash register, he was arrested for suspicion of burglary. He was highly intoxicated and would not provide a preliminary breath test. While at jail, deputies searched the man and found $40 in his pockets, matching the amount taken from the restaurant, the arrest report states. Bail: $25,000.

In other arrests:
— A 27-year-old Mound House man was booked Sunday into Carson City Jail for a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant issued Jan. 8, 2019. Bail: $1,000.

— A 59-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday, 7:52 p.m. in the area of Carson and Winnie streets for misdemeanor suspicion of DUI and being a resident with a non-resident license.

According to the arrest report, deputies were assigned to a DUI checkpoint. Deputies were advised of a possible DUI and made contact with the driver, who had red watery eyes and, slurred speech and appeared to have cotton mouth, the report states. He agreed to submit to standardized field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment, the arrest report states.

He was asked if he had been smoking marijuana. The man advised he had not smoked in months and denied using any other drugs, the report states. He was arrested for suspicion of DUI. He was asked to provide evidentiary testing and he consented to a blood draw. A sample was collected at jail, the report states. Bail: $1,249.

— A 26-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday, 9:42 p.m. for suspicion of DUI. According to the arrest report, deputies were assigned to a DUI checkpoint in the area of Carson and Winnie streets. Deputies were advised of a possible DUI driver in the parking lot in the 1800 block of North Carson Street, which was in the area of the checkpoint.

Deputies observed a blue sedan exit the checkpoint line and enter the adjacent, vacant parking lot. The vehicle traveled at a slow place through the parking lot and stopped outside of any parking space, the report states. The vehicle started again and appeared to exit the parking lot and re-enter the roadway. The vehicle made an abrupt turn into a parking space, outside of parking lines, the report states. The male driver, exited the vehicle. Deputies made contact regarding possible impairment.

The man advised he had approximately two shot bottles of an unknown alcoholic beverage that he had been sharing with a friend. Deputies observed he had red, watery eyes, slurred speech and could smell and odor of alcoholic beverage. The man submitted to standardized field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment, the report states. He provided a preliminary breath test of .139 and was arrested for suspicion of DUI. A deputy requested voluntary evidentiary testing from the man, who refused. Deputies obtained a warrant for an evidentiary blood draw while at the jail. Bail: $1,137.

UPDATE THURSDAY: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two people who died Wednesday morning following the two vehicle crash on I-580 in Carson City. They are Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra, 36, and Viola Santoyo Huizar, 48, both of Carson City.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Schools receiving the designation have committed to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families.
