Thursday procession for Carson City sheriff's deputy to move through North Carson Street

A funeral procession through Carson City for fallen Sheriff’s Deputy Carl Howell will be Thursday, 9 a.m. beginning at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office on Musser Street and will move along North Carson Street on its way to services in Reno.

The procession will be led by a fire truck that will carry Howell’s casket past the Nevada State Capitol and proceed north along Carson Street. It will meet up with a larger procession of law officers that will be staged at North Carson Street and College Parkway.

The funeral service for Howell, 35, will be at the Reno Events Center, 400 North Center Street, beginning at 11 a.m. The U.S. Honor Flag will be presented at the funeral. Howell died in the line of duty responding to a domestic violence call. He is survived by his wife, Rachel, and four children, ages 7 to 12.

For those unable to attend the service, the procession down North Carson Street is an opportunity for the community to pay their respects, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. Motorist should find alternative routes and avoid North Carson Street entirely.

Sheriff Furlong said he regrets and apologizes to the Carson City community that the service could not be held locally. With several thousand expected to attend from throughout the country, there was no way Carson City would be able to accommodate the anticipated seating capacity for the funeral services.

The decision was made after the tremendous outpouring of community strength and support became evident, said Furlong. With waves of law enforcement officers around the state and nation expected to attend, there was no place in town that had the capacity for vehicles and mourners.

The Carson City Sheriff’s administrative offices, along with the First Judicial District Court, Carson City Justice/Municipal Court, Alternative Sentencing Department, Advocates Office to End Domestic Violence, Juvenile Court and the Carson City Juvenile Probation Department will be closed Thursday to allow for employees to attend the funeral.

The Juvenile Court located at 1545 East Fifth Street will be closed on August 20, 2015 to the public as will the Juvenile Probation Department located at 740 S. Saliman Rd.

The Carson City Clerk/Recorder’s Office located at 885 E. Musser Street will remain open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For individuals seeking emergency Protection Orders, please call (775) 883-7654. If you have any questions with regards to any matters pending with these offices, please call the offices directly.

The Carson City Deputy Sheriff’s Association has set up an account for donations to the family of Deputy Howell.

Donations can be made at any Heritage Bank of Nevada branch, account No. 2000012522.

“This is a tragic reminder of the sacrifice all officers make as they lay their lives on the line every day in protecting our community,” said Don Gibson, president of the association. “This horrific event has taken a large toll on all members of our organization with unthinkable sadness. If you see a deputy, let them know you support them by a simple wave.”

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has set up a Go Fund Me account, via LCSO Deputy Nick Casaverde who writes: “Myself along with the rest of the deputies at Lyon County are saddened by the loss of a brother and understand the tremendous toll it takes on family and loved ones. Please help us to raise some funds for his family, no amount of money can ease the pain that losing a father and husband causes but it can help reduce the financial burden that follows. If you have any questions or suggestions please feel free to contact me on here or my county email at ngreenhut@lyon-county.org.”

On Thursday, 50 percent of all sales at the Cafe at Adele’s, 1112 N. Carson St. in Carson City, will go to help support the Howell family. Owners Charlie and Karen Abowd said they would match a portion of donations.

Donations will also be accepted at the remainder of the Carson City Farmer’s Market held Saturdays at Third and Curry streets.

The public is welcome to stop by Silver Strike Crossfit this Saturday at 9 am and honor Deputy Howell's sacrifice to our community. There will be a workout (you do not have to do it to attend), T-shirts sold for $20 each, memories shared, and a donation jar to fill. All proceeds go to Deputy Howell's family.

For more information, contact the Carson City Sheriff’s Office at 775-887-2500.

— Virginia Street will be closed south of the intersection with Fourth Street to Second Street.
— Other street closures will be Fifth Street, Plaza, and Commercial east of Virginia Street to Center Street. Center Street will be open with the exception of the northbound lane on the east side of the street.
