Carson City mother jailed for allowing 13-year-old to drive to store with young children
A 32-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Friday for suspicion of three counts gross misdemeanor child neglect after allegedly letting her 13-year-old daughter drive to the store with two other children aboard, a Carson City sheriff's report states.
According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched in reference to a vehicle that ran a stop sign and nearly hit a vehicle. The anonymous reporting party also stated the driver appeared to be too young to be driving. CCSO Undersheriff Jerome Tushbant advised he located the vehicle at a grocery store parking lot.
CCSO made contact with the 3 occupants of the vehicle, all juveniles, including the driver who was 13-years-old. The two others were described as young children, one being a 4-year-old who was not in a child safety seat and the other, a 10-year-old, sitting in the right front passenger seat.
The 13-year-old driver said she drove to the store to get food for her cousins and that she called her Mom, who then arrived at the location a short time later, the report states.
The mother said she allowed the 13-year-old to drive to the store from their residence. She told officers she thought that since she herself is a licensed driver, she would allow her juvenile daughter to drive, according to the arrest report. The mother further said she had been in the vehicle at one time, but then got out and returned home to check on another child and continued to let the 13-year-old drive to the store.
During the investigation the CCSO Undersheriff informed deputies that he could smell a strong odor of marijuana from the vehicle. Because the vehicle was occupied by juveniles, the vehicle was searched. Deputies located a multi-colored marijuana pipe, easily accessible for a juvenile to grab. The mother said the marijuana pipe belonged to a friend who she gave a ride to, the report states.
The children in the vehicle were transported to stay with relatives. Bail: $7,911.
