Carson City arrests: Man jailed after ramming patrol vehicle following pursuit

A Carson City man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of felony battery with a deadly weapon, misdemeanor evading police and reckless driving following a pursuit with sheriff's deputies that ended at a storage facility.

Shane Bostwick was taken into custody at 9:59 a.m. in the 1600 block of Colorado Street. According to the arrest report, deputies were alerted by a reporting party (RP) to a suspicious vehicle in the area of Champion Street that had been following a friend of the RP.

A deputy made a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle, a red Chevy SUV, and made contact with the driver, who said he was following a vehicle that had committed a burglary at a storage lot in the 1600 block of Colorado Street.
The officer told the driver, later identified as the suspect, Bostwick, to wait at the intersection so he could speak with the reporting party nearby.

The reporting party stated the driver of the red Chevy was following her friend, who told her that he became scared for his safety because he didn't know why he was being followed, the report states.

As the deputy was speaking with the reporting party, Bostwick fled, going east on Champion toward Mayflower. and then toward Sherman. The deputy activated his emergency lights and siren to stop Bostwick, who continued to go west on Sherman toward Airport Road.

At Airport Road and Sherman Lane, Bostwick rolled through the stop sign going south toward Highway 50. His speed at this point was approximately 35 to 45 mph. At the intersection of Airport and Highway 50, Bostwick stopped due to traffic, the report states.

The deputy, with his emergency lights on and siren activated, stopped behind his vehicle, which then pulled away, turning west on Highway 50. At Highway 50 and Lompa Lane, the vehicle was is in the No. 1 travel lane and stopped at the red light.

The deputy again attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle with his emergency lights and siren activated. The officer then exited his vehicle, at which time, the vehicle pulled forward and made an illegal left hand turn onto Lompa Lane, failing to yield, the report states.

Additional units assisted with attempting to stop Bostwick, who drove south on Lompa Lane, east on Menlo, North on Airport, East on Woodside, south on Siskiyou, East on Desatoya, and south on Fairview. While on Fairview, Bostwick would speed up and then do heavy braking, the arrest report states. His speeds were paced at approximately 70 mph in a posted 40 mph zone on Fairview. Due to the man's erratic driving, the pursuit was terminated at Fairview and Saliman, the report states.

Units continued to follow Bostwick at a safe distance, where he changed his speed to approximately 35 mph and then drove up Fairview to Roop Street. Bostwick turned south on Roop Street than east on Colorado Street. He pulled into a mini storage facility on Colorado Street. The facility had a closed metal gate that required a gate code.

Deputies pulled behind Bostwick, and to the side of him with lights and sirens and instructed Bostwick to exit the vehicle. At this time the gate began to open and Bostwick fled again, pulling onto the property of the storage facility, the report states.

At one point, while inside the facility, he was traveling north between two storage units. Bostock observed 2 patrol units in front of him. He stopped his vehicle. There was also a patrol unit about 40 feet behind Boswick. The suspect put his vehicle in reverse, and with heavy acceleration, rammed the occupied patrol unit behind him, the report states.

At that time, deputies approached the vehicle, broke the driver's window and pulled Bostwick out of the vehicle, placing him in handcuffs. Bostwick was arrested and charged with battery with a deadly weapon, reckless driving and eluding law enforcement. Bail: $31,274.

In other arrests:
— An 18-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday, 2:34 p.m. in the area of Pheasant and Latigo streets for misdemeanor suspicion of reckless driving, driving without a valid license and DUI drugs, a Carson City sheriff's deputy report said.

According to the arrest report, a deputy responded to the area for a report of a non-injury crash. Deputies arrived on scene and observed a black SUV in a yard on the east side of the intersection. The vehicle struck a tree and was high centered.

The driver advised he tried to make a U-turn and lost control. He advised he was fine and didn't need medical attention. The man's eyes were red and watery and he had a delayed response to answering questions, with the officer having to clarify questions for him, the report states. The man denied drinking alcohol or taking drugs. He was asked if he had been smoking marijuana. The man stated no.

The officer asked him when he smoked marijuana last. The man was unable to provide a definitive answer. The officer asked him if he would submit to standardized field sobriety tests. The man agreed. He showed impairment on the tests and was arrested for suspicion of DUI drugs. An evidentiary sample of blood was later obtained.

Evidence at the crash showed the driver was going east on Pheasant at Latigo at a high rate of speed, leaving approximately 65 feet of scuff marks. The vehicle failed to negotiate the turn northbound on Latigo and traveled straight, over the sidewalk and struck two trees. Bail: $1,966.

— A 52-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 12:42 p.m. in the 1400 block of East William Street for misdemeanor driving on a revoked license for DUI, Department of Alternative Sentencing violation and speeding. According to the arrest report, the man was stopped for speeding. Radon's confirmed the man was going 51 mph in a 35 mph zone.

The man stated his driver's California license was not good due to child support. A records check showed his license to be suspended or revoked. A Nevada DMV record showed his license had been revoked for DUI. He was on Department of Alternative Sentencing with a condition to obey all laws and drive with a valid license. He was arrested. Bail: $2,137.

— A 34-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Saturday in the 2400 block of Lewis Drive for misdemeanor suspicion of violation of a restraining order.

According to the arrest report, Carson City deputies were called to a residence regarding the woman being there. The protection order had been placed on her by her grandmother. Deputies located the woman, who was walking away from the residence. She was detained and the protection order was confirmed. It prohibited her from being within 100 yards of the residence in question. She was arrested at 8:36 a.m. for violation of the order.

She told the deputy she wanted to collect items from her grandmother's home and didn't have time to wait for a officer for a standby.

According to the arrest report, the reporting party (RP) told the deputy the woman came to her home the night prior to collect items and again that morning and became uncooperative when she was told she could not take items that didn't belong to her. Bail: $3,000.

— A 30-year-old Utah man was arrested Sunday, 9:22 p.m. in the 3100 block of Highway 50 East for misdemeanor suspicion of defrauding a taxi driver and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the arrest report, the taxi driver explained he picked up the man from a casino in Dayton who requested a ride to a sub shop in Carson City. The driver asked the man if he had money to pay for the fare to Carson City and the man replied he had a debit card and cash.

Once at the sub shop, the taxi driver said the man grabbed his backpack and attempted to exit the cab. The driver requested payment of $38.74. The driver said the man began yelling at him, saying he was an undercover police officer and didn't have to pay. The driver called the sheriff's office. The suspect was contacted and was asked why he didn't pay his cab fare. He replied he has a mental illness and needed a ride to Carson City to be safe.

Officers spoke with the man, where it became clear he suffered from mental health issues. The officer explained to the man that if he couldn't pay for the cab the driver would pursue charges. The man attempted to use his debit and credit cards, both which were declined. The driver advised he wished to press charges and the man was arrested. While at the detention facility, inside the man's backpack, the deputy located a straw with a small light bulb and residue, commonly used for smoking methamphetamine. Bail: $1,439.

UPDATE THURSDAY: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two people who died Wednesday morning following the two vehicle crash on I-580 in Carson City. They are Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra, 36, and Viola Santoyo Huizar, 48, both of Carson City.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

A 37-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of obstruction, trespassing and felony sex offender failing to register, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.
