Winner of multiple Tony and Academy awards, this musical tells the story of a postulant who proves too high-spirited for the abbey and is sent to serve as a governess for the seven children of a retired naval captain. She brings music back into the home and captures the hearts of the children and their father.
Set against the background of the Nazi occupation of Austria in the 1940’s, the family struggles to retain their freedom and their ideals while their father is pressured to join Hitler’s naval command.
One critic comments, “The sentiments of the Sound of Music are genuine and are presented, unabashedly and effectively, in the show’s music, lyrics and dialogue…It is uplifting theater, appealing successfully and without apology to the better side of our natures.”
The story offers some of Broadway’s most beloved numbers, including Climb Every Mountain and Edelweiss. Maria Arrigotti plays the postulant Maria opposite August Stoten as Captain von Trapp. Jim DeZerga is the lovable but conniving Max and Mitzi Nelson is von Trapp’s fiancé, Elsa. Carla Wilson plays the Mother Abbess.
Danita Bayer plays the oldest daughter, Liesl. The roles of the remaining six von Trapp children are double cast. “It is an impressive and engaging cast,” said director/producer Stephanie Arrigotti. “They are each incredible performers with distinct personalities, bringing wonderful energy and depth to this beautiful story. “
Some 40 performers complete the cast, accompanied by a 14-piece professional orchestra. Gina Kaskie-Davis is the choreographer.
The Sound of Music is hailed as Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most popular work, warranting an in-depth story by CNN in 1995 exploring the world’s ongoing love affair with the musical for 35 years. The show is performed internationally, reaching more than 60,000 people each year. The 1965 movie inspired by the stage production is the most successful movie musical in history.
