Doug Busey's Lake Tahoe and Sierra fishing report for opening day of California fishing

Hello fellow anglers. There is less than four days to go before the California fishing season officially opens. When the sun comes up on April 26, 2014 there will be a lot of casting going on.

I urge every angler who has purchased a sport fishing license to also pick up a copy of the fishing regulations. The game wardens will be out checking to make sure that we all follow the regulations.

As a reminder, the streams that lead into Lake Tahoe do not open for fishing until July 1, 2014. This includes Trout Creek, Upper Truckee River and Taylor Creek, all located on the south end of Lake Tahoe.

One fish over your limit or forgetting that you are in California, fishing with a Nevada license can cost you up to $1000 or more, and a possible lose of fishing privileges.

A new proposed regulation is, it is unlawful to follow the plant truck in Alpine County. Of course the proposal did not pass. It is not unlawful, it just shows signs of a desperate angler.

This year the CDFG and Alpine County Fish Commission has made sure that all anglers will have an awesome opening season. Over the last couple of weeks they have planted the East and West Fork Carson Rivers, Markleeville Creek, Silver Creek and Lake Alpine with almost 8000 lbs of rainbow trout. By Saturday morning they should be pretty hungry for anything that flies by them.

I will not be able to make this year's opening season, but Renee and I will be fishing the following week on the rivers. I hope to see you on the waters.

Here is your local report for Alpine County.
SILVER LAKE:
As of last week the lake was ice free and many anglers were taking advantage of spring fishing from shore.

CAPLES LAKE:
The lake has open water at the spillway and Woods Creek as of last week. Many anglers have been tossing a night crawler off the edge of the ice and having success for rainbows and browns.
Stay off of the lake as it is unstable and is thawing quickly. Even with our recent cooling trend it is unsafe to venture out on.
In talking with Dave, from the resort, last week the lake should be completely thawed by mid May.
For more information call the Caples Lake Resort at 209-258-8888.

BLUE LAKES:
The road is only open to the third gate,  approximately 4.5 miles.

BURNSIDE LAKE:
Road closed.

WOODS LAKE:
Road closed

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR:
The campground will open on May 2nd at 12 noon.
The fishing has been very good for small rainbow and cutthroat trout.
Renee and I venture up recently to fish for a couple hours. I threw Kastmasters and spoons while Renee used Power Bait. We caught and released many trout in a short time. I talked to other anglers who had the same fortune.

CARSON RIVER EAST FORK CALIFORNIA SIDE:
The water is running a little green as of last week but should clear up for opening day.  The Carson River Resort is open for tent and RV camping, and  they also have cabin rentals available. They have a fully stocked general store for all the items you forgot to bring or just need to re-supply.
For more information or to make reservations call the Carson River Resort at 530-694-2229. Make sure to stop by and say hello to the new managers of the Carson River Resort,  David and Marilyn Nickerson. Give them a big Alpine County welcome.

CARSON RIVER WEST FORK CALIFORNIA SIDE:
The waters are running clear and fast as of last Tuesday. Fishing should be good from Blue Lakes road through Hope Valley to Woodfords.
When fishing there stop by the new Todd's Bait and Supplies located on highway 89 just a few miles up from Woodfords jct. They offer fishing tackle as well as burgers and hot dogs. They can be reached at 530-863-6256.

WOLF CREEK, SILVER CREEK:
Road is open and the rivers have been stocked.

KINNEY RESERVOIR:
As of last Tuesday the road was closed past Wolf Creek.
I hope you have a great opening day fishing adventure. If you have any questions in our local fishing world call the Naw Line at 775-267-9722.

If you get a picture of your catch send it to donquilici@hotmail.com. I will be sharing some pictures of this year's opening day in my next article. Good fishin and tight lines.
