Fundraiser Proceeds Preserves Comstock History
The Comstock Foundation for History and Culture raised $15,003 for nine organization within the Comstock Historic District. The Comstock Foundation matched donations up to $1,000 for each organization.
The fundraising event was part of a commemoration of the restoration of the Upper Yellow Jacket hoist and ore chute in Gold Hill, the Foundation’s first substantial preservation project since organizing in June 2013. Work on the Upper Yellow Jacket hoist and ore chute cost roughly $100,000.
“I am very pleased that the Comstock Foundation could celebrate the restoration of an important part of the historic district by raising funds for organizations that help make the community a better place,” said Corrado De Gasperis, chairman of the Board of the Comstock Foundation. De Gasperis is also the CEO of Comstock Mining, Inc., which has dedicated a 1 percent royalty of its mine in Storey County to the Comstock Foundation for the advancement of historic preservation and other aspects of cultural development on the Comstock.
Funds were awarded to the following organizations: Historic Fourth Ward School Museum, $2,845; Storey County Library, $1,198; Comstock Cemetery Foundation, $1,210; Dayton Historical Society, $1,512; St. Mary's Art and Retreat Center, $1,316; Piper's Opera House, $2,167; Comstock Firemen's Museum, $2,417; Silver City Cemetery, $1,172; Silver State National Peace Officers Museum, $1,166.
“These organizations play a vital role in preserving historic resources and advancing the celebration of the Comstock’s past,” said Ron James, executive director of the Comstock Foundation. “It was great to see the
community come together with donations at our reception, and I am pleased that we can advance the causes of these nine important groups.”
The Comstock Foundation for History and Culture is now moving its focus to help with the restoration of several other structures including the Gold Hill Depot. On June 7 it will co-sponsoring a Virginia City Tourism Commission special event, the “Muckfest,” a celebration of mining heritage on the Comstock.
The Foundation’s mission is to encourage the preservation and promotion of historic and cultural resources within the Comstock Historic District. The District was granted National Historic Landmark Status in 1961 and is one of the largest landmarks in the country. The Comstock played a critical role in the history of mining, producing an enormous amount of gold and silver and defining the cutting edge of mining technology during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
