Carson City area road report for week of March 7-13; downtown project begins

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of March 7-13, 2016: Beginning Monday, March 7, work will begin on the downtown corridor improvement project on Carson Street.

This week, traffic will be reduced to one lane each direction. On Monday, March 7 and Tuesday, March 8, north and southbound traffic will be diverted to the northbound side road. As work progresses, crews may be in the right lanes each direction.

As crews work, southbound Sophia and Ann Street will be closed on the west side. No more than two side streets will be closed at a time. When crews are working near intersections, left turn movement will be limited. Closures subject to change due to weather issues.

There will be lane closures with flagger-controlled traffic on College Parkway just east of Airport Road and at the intersection of College Parkway and Dale Drive, Monday through Friday, due to utility work.

There will be road closures on Washington Street at the following locations due to the construction of the East/West Water Transmission Project:

— Curry Street to Phillips Street, Monday through Wednesday.

— Carson Street to Stewart Street, Tuesday through Thursday.

— Stewart Street to Roop Street, Wednesday and Thursday.

— Shoulder closures from Curry Street to Roop Street, Friday.

On Monday, March 7, the traffic signal at the intersection of Carson Street and Arrowhead Drive/Medical Parkway will be converted to a four-way stop due to signal maintenance. Please use caution.

Lane closures are expected at the following locations due to utility work: — Center Drive at the intersection with Topsy Lane. — The northbound Carson Street to westbound Hot Springs Road turn pocket (Thursday only). - Presti Lane (shoulder work only).

Race Track Road will be closed to through traffic between Bigelow Drive and Schulz Drive, and Bigelow Drive will be closed to through traffic south of Snyder Avenue for the entire week.

There will be intermittent lane closures at the intersection of King Street and Ormsby Boulevard. Minor delays are possible.

The Bellevue Road bridge over I-580 in Washoe Valley will continue to be closed due to maintenance. The overpass and ramps are expected to be closed for approximately three months. Detours will be signed.

With the winter storm underway Sunday, the National Weather Service in Reno warns that motorists should be prepared for adverse conditions for Monday morning commute between Reno and Carson City. A Winter Weather Advisory for the Carson City runs through 10 a.m. Monday.

If you have plans to travel through the Sierra be sure to check the latest forecast at weather.gov/Reno and check road conditions with Caltrans and NDOT.

Around Lake Tahoe and the Sierra this week, Caltrans reports the following for the week of March 6-12, 2016:

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Sierra College Boulevard to Newcastle Road: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect alternating lane closures and on-ramp closures from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday through Saturday for bridge work.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) at the Newcastle Road overcrossing: Motorists can expect intermittent full ramp closures to Interstate 80 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday February 22 through Friday February 26 until 7 a.m. Saturday February 27 for bridge work.

State Route 89 (Placer/Nevada County) at the Union Pacific Railroad undercrossing south of Interstate 80: Nicknamed the “Mousehole” project, work continues to construct a pedestrian and bicycle tunnel under the Union Pacific Railroad adjacent to the existing SR 89 undercrossing and construct a Class I paved trail along the east side of SR 89 between Deerfield Drive and West River Street.

State Route 89 (Placer/Nevada County) from West River Street to Deerfield Drive: No traffic interfering work scheduled for this week.

State Route 20 (Nevada County) from the junction with SR 174 to the WB off ramp to Bennett Street: Motorists can expect left turn lane on the off ramp and lane one of the surface street closures from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday March 7 to March 11 for utility work.

State Route 49 (Sierra County) from Rams Horn Campground to Sidehill viaduct: Motorists can expect right lane and shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday March 7 to March 11 for guardrail work.

State Route 49 (Yuba/Sierra County) from Marysville Road to Yuba Pass summit: Motorists can expect right lane and shoulder closures from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday March 7 to March 11 for miscellaneous work.

State Route 174 – Westbound (Nevada County) from Ophir Street to Memorial Lane: Motorists can expect alternating lane one way traffic control and right shoulder closures on the local cross streets from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday March 7 to March 11 for utility work.

State Route 174 – Westbound (Nevada County) from Clark Street to Auburn Street/end of /Route 174: Motorists can expect alternating lane one way traffic control and right shoulder closures on the local cross streets overnight from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday night March 6 through Monday to overnight Friday through Saturday March 12 for utility work.

State Route 193 (Placer County) from Fowler Lane to Rainbow Valley Lane: Motorists can expect lane closures (one way traffic control) and right shoulder restrictions from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday March 7 to March 11 for tree work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Latrobe Road/El Dorado Hills Boulevard to Bass Lake Road: Motorists can expect a full highway closure from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday for blasting. The eastbound and westbound #1 and #2 lanes are scheduled to be closed from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. and the westbound on-ramp at Bass Lake Road and eastbound on-ramp at Latrobe Road/El Dorado Hills to be closed from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m.

State Route 28 (Placer County) from Secline Street to Coon Street in Kings Beach: The annual SnowFest Parade will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 12.

State Route 28 (Placer County) from Laurel Drive to Anderson Road: Westbound motorists can expect the auxiliary lane and shoulder closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday for sewer work.

State Route 193 (El Dorado County) from Black Oak Mine Road to Traverse Creek Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for utility work.

State Route 193 (El Dorado County) at Rock Creek Road: Motorists can expect long-term signalized one-way traffic control for emergency repair work.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

In collaboration with Chartwells, the Carson City School District foodservice partner, Culinary Arts students from Ms. Tammy Borreman’s class at Carson Middle School competed in a “Discovery Kitchen Cook Off.” Similar to a mini version of the Food Network’s Iron Chef, the timed cooking competition featured teams of three students who prepared succulent dishes for a judging panel.

Six local bowlers were inducted in the third class of the Carson Country Bowling Association Hall of Fame at their annual meeting on Saturday, April 27, at HomeGrown Bowl. Carson Country is the local association of the U.S. Bowling Congress.

Camp GOTR (Girls on the Run) is coming to Carson City for the second year in a row! Camp GOTR will be a week-long, half-day summer camp from 8 AM- 12 PM at the Carson City Community Center the week of August 5th- August 9th.

Girls on the Run Sierras is a character-building program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade operating in the Reno-Tahoe area.

A number of new Junior Park Rangers received their badges as they were sworn in as part of the annual Junior Park Rangers Day in Carson City.
