Wish You Were Here: solo exhibition by Susanne Forestieri in the CCAI Courthouse Gallery
The Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] presents its exhibition, "Wish You Were Here", by artist Susanne Forestieri at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. CCAI will host a reception for the artist on Friday, October 6, 5-7pm. The exhibit will be in the gallery from October 6, 2017 – January 18, 2018.
The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open to the public Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm.
Painter Susanne Forestieri focuses her work on the figure and abstract images. She applies her expressive, impressionistic style to diverse subjects including showgirls, dancers, family portraits, New York City street scenes, and landscapes. Oils, charcoal, pastels, and pencil are her media of choice.
Of the small figurative paintings that she’s created over the last decade, Forestieri said: “I began the series in 1995 based on photographs that I took more than twenty years ago of my daughter and her friends while they were playing dress-ups. My work gradually evolved from painting depictions of children’s fantasy play to painting everyday intimate moments in people’s lives when they reveal something about themselves that is real and precious. Pictorial spaces between and around figures describe emotional relationships as well as individual isolation. Each painting depicts a small drama that leaves something to the viewer’s imagination.”
About her abstract pieces, Forestieri said: “Where I grew up the sky was usually glimpsed between tall buildings, not the dominant feature of the landscape, but a column of blue. When I moved out west from NYC I said ‘there’s so much sky.’ I loved it.
Forestieri studied at the Art Students League in New York City from 1971 – 1974 and earned a M.A. in Education in 2001 and her B.F.A. cum laude in 1995, both from UNLV. She received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1996. The Las Vegas Art Museum presented her work in a retrospective exhibition in 2003. The Las Vegas City Hall, Bellagio Hotel, Girl Scouts of America, and the McCarren International Airport have her art in their permanent collections. She teaches drawing at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and shows her work nationally.
Arts writer Kristen Peterson wrote the exhibition essay, "Light and Shadow — a Las Vegas Palette". Peterson has been chronicling the Las Vegas arts scene for the past 18 years, winning first place awards for her coverage of its artists, galleries, museums, organizations, exhibits, public art and academic institutions. Her work has appeared in various local and national publications, including KNPR's Desert Companion, Vegas Seven, Las Vegas Sun, Las Vegas Weekly, Vice Munchies and The Guardian.
This exhibition is supported by a lead donation from the NV Energy Foundation.
