27th Nevada Day Classic to Benefit Guide Dogs for the Blind

October 29, 2016 (All day) Since 1989 the annual Nevada Day Classic, an 8K Run or 2-mile Run/Walk presented by the Tahoe Mountain Milers, brings together hundreds of runners and walkers of all shapes and sizes — as Halloween costumes are encouraged — who hit the streets of the historic West Side of Carson City with Guide Dog Puppies-in-Training serving as course marshals to woof them on! Families and groups can participate in the walk, enjoy the race breakfast, and help celebrate Nevada by enjoying the Nevada Day Parade that immediately follows the Classic.
The Carson City Guide Dog Club and Eyes For Tomorrow puppy-raising club of Reno are organizing the Nevada Day Classic and providing the puppy course marshals. All net proceeds will be donated to Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB), and to local puppy raising clubs.
These clubs have volunteers who take puppies provided by GDB into their lives to love, train, and socialize them until they are about 15-18 months old. Then the dog is ready for formal training at GDB. “Many people ask how we can stand to give our puppies up after we raise them. I tell them that it is difficult. We get attached to our puppies and we love them, but the most genuine and sincere ‘thank yous’ I have ever received have come from the men and women who received my puppies as guide dogs,” says long-time puppy raiser Kelsey Mammen, who has raised 13 puppies for GDB.
There will be a special presentation of an 8-week-old guide dog puppy-in-training named Nevada who will be raised in the Carson City Guide Dog Club. Guide Dogs for the Blind is one of the premier guide dog training organizations in the world that provide blind and visually impaired individuals specifically trained guide dogs to use as mobility assistants free of charge. GDB is a non-profit, contributor-supported organization that receives no government funds.
