With Nevada Day festivities rolling this week without the coveted official parade along Carson Street, some have noted on social media their intention to rally their own independent parades.

While not illegal or encouraged, the Carson City Sheriff's Office is staffed up to make sure that whoever chooses to do anything non-sanctioned, including independent parading on Carson Street, that whatever they choose to do is done without breaking the law.

Both Nevada State Museums in Carson City will celebrate Nevada Day with free admission on Friday, Oct. 28 — the observed holiday — as well as on Saturday, Oct. 29, the day of the Nevada Day Parade along Carson Street in downtown Carson City.

27th Nevada Day Classic to Benefit Guide Dogs for the Blind

Since 1989 the annual Nevada Day Classic, an 8K Run or 2-mile Run/Walk presented by the Tahoe Mountain Milers, brings together hundreds of runners and walkers of all shapes and sizes — as Halloween costumes are encouraged — who hit the streets of the historic West Side of Carson City with Guide Dog Puppies-in-Training serving as course marshals to woof them on! Nevada Day parade to follow traditional route, partners with Carson City Visitors Bureau

The annual Nevada Day parade, which celebrates the state’s admission to the Union in 1864, will run its traditional route north to south along Carson Street in Carson City this year.

“People are used to seeing it start at William Street and ending up at Stewart Street,” said Ken Hamilton, executive director of Nevada Day Inc. “A lot of people watch the parade from the same spot every year, and we didn’t want them to have to change. We decided to stick with tradition.”

Nevada Day organizers looking at reversing course of parade

The organizers of the annual Nevada Day celebration are considering changing the course of the parade to move from south to north on Carson Street.

The staff of Nevada Day, Inc. met on Tuesday with Carson CIty officials to go over the planned changes for the parade. The basic outlines for the plan have the parade starting on South Carson Street at 10th Street, continuing north before taking a right turn on William Street, and ending at the intersection with Stewart Street.

In the dying light of the October sun, Ryan Green swings his hammer. The rhythmic clank of steel on steel punctuates the sounds of traffic, signifying the end of the work day, on nearby Curry Street in Carson City.

“OK, Ryan, let’s slap a little bit now,” Tobin Rupert encourages. “Just keep pumping away. Looking good.”

New chairman to run Nevada Day beard contest

Bob Stransky has always had fun competing in the Beard Contest as part of the annual Nevada Day celebration. However, he’s taken a more earnest tone this year as he takes over for the first time as chairman of the competition.
