The newly opened Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum is hosting tours and demonstrations today to celebrate Nevada Day.

Heading into the final weekend of October, Halloween and Nevada Day events will keep revelers busy through Sunday making for a jam packed weekend of fun for families and grownups around the Carson City region.

With Nevada Day festivities rolling this week without the coveted official parade along Carson Street, some have noted on social media their intention to rally their own independent parades.

While not illegal or encouraged, the Carson City Sheriff's Office is staffed up to make sure that whoever chooses to do anything non-sanctioned, including independent parading on Carson Street, that whatever they choose to do is done without breaking the law.

CARSON CITY — To honor and raise funds for Nevada’s health care workers, historic Coin Press No. 1 will mint a special medallion from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St. in Carson City.

The Nevada Day Golf Tournament is returning to Carson City this Nevada Day after a long absence from the capital city.

According to Ken Hamilton, Executive Director of Nevada Day, the Golf Tournament is making a comeback this year for the first time in over a decade.

The Nevada Day Committee would like to officially announce that, due to current conditions, the traditional Nevada Day Celebration will have a new look this year.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Builders Alliance and its philanthropic arm the Nevada Builders Foundation, in partnership with Battle Born Beer and Red’s Old 395 Grill, raised a total of $3,870 at the Nevada Day parade, setting its yearly total at nearly $9,500.

Those who made Nevada Day 2019 possible — the volunteers who put in hundreds of hours of organizing and preparing — were celebrated Thursday evening at a Carson City dinner held at Casino Fandango.

This year, the fan-favorite Cecil the Serpent of Walker Lake will be returning to Carson City for the first time in decades to participate in the Nevada Day parade this Saturday.

And we're off as we count down the days until Saturday's Nevada Day celebration, the biggest statewide party of its kind or any kind for that matter. Going into the first day of the work week, Monday, Oct. 21, we're looking at sunshine and a high around 70. Events around the capital city include a lunch discussion on the Secret Witness program, art showings, West Coast swing dancing and more.

Nevada's celebration of statehood provides for a bevy of activities that showcase the Silver State's best. From contests to exhibits, food and beverages of all kinds, Native dancing, hot air balloons, concerts, a carnival celebration at Mills Park and the famed Nevada Day parade, there is something for everyone throughout the long weekend.

The Nevada Day Parade in Carson City begins with the Divisions 1-4 lineup at 8:30 a.m. and Divisions 5-10 lineup at 9 a.m. with a 10 a.m. start. The parade will end sometime around 2 p.m. The route will be closed from 5 a.m. until 3 p.m. Read on for safety information to make your parade day a most memorable one.

It’s that time again. Time to validate your passports to downtown Carson City. For the the third year, businesses are once again opening their doors to customers for the Passport to Downtown on Friday.

When it comes to industry, Nevada has been known since its infancy for the three majors: gaming, mining and ranching.

However, in the last decade, we’ve seen an expansion into many other industries as well, with technology quickly becoming the most prevalent since Tesla relocated to our desert and began the trend of big tech companies building in our region.

Carson City locals that frequent the downtown area may have noticed some silence on the hour instead of the bell chimes familiar ring at the Laxalt Building this past summer. The original Carillon — an electronic device that simulates tuned bell chimes — broke down after ringing on the hour since 1999.

It’s that time again. The Battle Born state celebrates its admission to the United States on the last Friday of October, with the annual Nevada Day parade on Saturday. New this year is a ‘Passport to Downtown’ event on Friday. Also new this year is the one-night-only curated art show, Capital Collage, on Friday night featuring over 20 diverse artists and organizations.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada State Museum is seeking volunteers and history ambassadors for the Nevada Day celebration on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Artists from across the state, representing an array of mediums, are featured on the cover of this year’s Nevada Day program.
“The cover is a shared authorship of several artists, which plays into the ideals of the Nevada Day parade and its theme,” said Mark Salinas, Carson City’s director of arts and culture.

A tribute to Nevada’s arts and entertainment will kick off this year’s Nevada Day festivities celebrating the same theme. Capital Collage 2017, featuring a variety of arts and artists from across the state, will be 7-11 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, 1870 Russell Way.

This annual event is to help the RSVP,Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program with their mission to help frail, homebound, and low-income seniors remain independent by providing high quality programs which allow them to stay in their own homes with dignity.

Both Nevada State Museums in Carson City will celebrate Nevada Day with free admission on Friday, Oct. 28 — the observed holiday — as well as on Saturday, Oct. 29, the day of the Nevada Day Parade along Carson Street in downtown Carson City.

Since 1989 the annual Nevada Day Classic, an 8K Run or 2-mile Run/Walk presented by the Tahoe Mountain Milers, brings together hundreds of runners and walkers of all shapes and sizes — as Halloween costumes are encouraged — who hit the streets of the historic West Side of Carson City with Guide Dog Puppies-in-Training serving as course marshals to woof them on! Families and groups can participate in the walk, enjoy the race breakfast, and help celebrate Nevada by enjoying the Nevada Day Parade that immediately follows the Classic.

The annual Nevada Day parade, which celebrates the state’s admission to the Union in 1864, will run its traditional route north to south along Carson Street in Carson City this year.

“People are used to seeing it start at William Street and ending up at Stewart Street,” said Ken Hamilton, executive director of Nevada Day Inc. “A lot of people watch the parade from the same spot every year, and we didn’t want them to have to change. We decided to stick with tradition.”

The organizers of the annual Nevada Day celebration are considering changing the course of the parade to move from south to north on Carson Street.

The staff of Nevada Day, Inc. met on Tuesday with Carson CIty officials to go over the planned changes for the parade. The basic outlines for the plan have the parade starting on South Carson Street at 10th Street, continuing north before taking a right turn on William Street, and ending at the intersection with Stewart Street.

In the dying light of the October sun, Ryan Green swings his hammer. The rhythmic clank of steel on steel punctuates the sounds of traffic, signifying the end of the work day, on nearby Curry Street in Carson City.

“OK, Ryan, let’s slap a little bit now,” Tobin Rupert encourages. “Just keep pumping away. Looking good.”

Bob Stransky has always had fun competing in the Beard Contest as part of the annual Nevada Day celebration. However, he’s taken a more earnest tone this year as he takes over for the first time as chairman of the competition.
