Dayton Golf Course hosts chili cookoff, tasting and silent auction to benefit Food Pantry

January 25, 2020 - 12:00pm DAYTON, Nev. — The Dayton Chili Cookers are partnering with Healthy Communities Coalition’s Dayton Food Pantry for their annual chili cookoff, silent auction, and raffle to benefit the Pantry. Organizers say the community made this event a big success last year, when more than $3,700 was raised, and they are excited to see the turn out this year.
Registration for the event begins at noon on Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Dayton Valley Golf Course at 101 Palmer Drive. Chili tasters are always welcomed, and it’s just $5 to sample. Tasting begins at 1 p.m.
When you buy any of the unique creations at the event’s craft tables, bid on silent auction items, or buy a $5 ticket to sample the delicious chili, you’ll also be bringing nourishment for your friends and neighbors in need.
Dayton Valley Golf Course Events Coordinator Rick Vaughan notes that the community has donated many great raffle prizes, including pizzas, coffee from Starbucks, and gift cards from various local businesses. In the silent auction, event visitors can bid on all sorts of items, such as rounds of golf at several courses, and dinner credit at restaurants such as Js’ Old Town Bistro and CV Steak at the Carson Valley Inn.
“The Chili Cookoff is a wonderful opportunity to support our neighbors and have some friendly competitive fun at the same time. We are so thankful to our community, the chili cooks, the raffle and silent auction donors, the crafters, and the Dayton Valley Golf Course for their support of the Pantry,” Healthy Communities’ Executive Director Wendy Madson said.
What Does the Dayton Food Pantry Do? Residents of the Dayton area work with the nonprofit Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties in volunteer service to keep the pantry going strong. Volunteers range from the very young to elders, and come from all walks of life, united by the belief that no one should go hungry.
From the Pantry site at 209 Dayton Valley Road, those in need can find nutritious food including fresh produce, meat, dairy products, dried beans, canned food and more Monday-Thursday from 10am-4pm.
During 2018-2019, the Dayton Food Pantry served 1,121 individuals and distributed nearly half a million pounds of food. In addition, more than 200 food backpacks are stuffed and delivered to local schools each month, providing children with much-needed food during weekends.
Through grants, food drives by local groups, USDA, and the generous donations of businesses and individuals in the region, the Pantry is able to help people of all ages combat hunger. The Pantry also collects food through Food Bank of Northern Nevada and benefits from reduced price rates from many area businesses.
