Js' Bistro to Host Fundraiser for the Dayton Food Pantry

Js’ Old Town Bistro will host a Spaghetti Feed on Tuesday, December 13th, from 5 – 8pm to benefit the Dayton Food Pantry. $10.00 buys a spaghetti dinner, with $5.00 going directly to the Food Pantry.
Last month nearly 3000 people sought help from The Pantry, including 127 new families, a significant increase over last year. That number is expected to rise even more as Christmas approaches.

Man arrested near food bank for felony heroin possession

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested transient Joshua T. Lieberman, 30, at the corner of Fall and Long streets Wednesday afternoon, for felony possession of a controlled substance with the intent to sell and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched after a call was placed about a person possibly selling drugs. Deputies spotted the subject - later identified as Lieberman - near the FISH store, acting nervously and clenching his left fist. Being told to relax made the subject more nervous.

Carson City to host Heal the World Interfaith Picnic of Nevada

Various faiths are coming together to have a picnic in Nevada’s capital Carson City at the end of the month.
Christians of various denominations, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, Baha’is, and others, besides sharing food, music, games, prayers, a “Peace Cake”, etc., will also try to find similarities between their diverse traditions at second annual “Heal the World Interfaith Picnic of Nevada” on July 31, said Adina Richman Karst, vent coordinator.

Dayton yard sale nets more than $2,000 for food bank

Freida Carbery of Dayton Food Pantry extended a big thank you to dozens of volunteers, including JPO youths and staff, who organized and ran the May 7 yard sale benefit for the local Dayton Food Pantry, with help from hundreds of people in the region who donated items for the fundraiser, which made $2,173 in one day for the busy pantry at 4 Enterprise Way in Dayton.

Healthy Communities Coalition: Collaboration Leads to Results

The Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey hosts special speakers during public meetings held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 9am at the Silver Springs Community Center at 2945 Ft. Churchill Road. When the Dayton Food Bank issued an open invitation to partner with them for The Feinstein $1 Million Dollar Challenge to fight hunger, dozens of individuals, businesses, schools, nonprofits and clubs stepped up to help.

Dayton Food Pantry makes plea for Thanksgiving turkey donors

With an unemployment rate of nearly 20 percent in Lyon County, the Dayton Food Pantry has seen a big jump in requests for Thanksgiving food baskets and is asking the community for help.

Food Pantry Director Freida Carbery reports that while many individuals and groups have donated turkeys and trimmings, there are already 100 families in need on the Pantry list, and only 40 turkeys in the freezer. The Pantry's list of those in need doesn’t even include the numbers of families she expects to receive from the local schools this week.

A dozen community and labor groups from Nevada have signed onto a letter to Attorney General Catherine Cortez-Masto urging her to support, not file suit, over federal health care reform.
Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons this week demanded the Attorney General join a lawsuit filed by 14 other Attorneys General to block implementation of federal health care reform, a package of changes that critics of the lawsuits claim are needed in Nevada, where an estimated 400,000 men, women and children lack health insurance coverage.
