Dayton Grocery Outlet food drive brings in more than 1,000 pounds of food for local pantry
Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties reports that a March food drive at the Dayton Grocery Outlet brought in 1,082 pounds of food for the Coalition’s Dayton Food Pantry clients.
Lisa Selmi, Healthy Communities’ fiscal manager, said, “we’d like to give a huge shout out to Dayton Grocery Outlet for the March 20 food drive, and we thank all the community members who donated. This food drive will provide full tummies to many of our residents in need. We love our local partnerships across Lyon County!”
Partnerships create powerful collaborative impacts such as increased food security.
For example, the Pantry receives support through grants, foundations, USDA, and the generous donations of businesses, community groups and individuals. The Pantry also acquires food through Food Bank of Northern Nevada and through reduced rates from many area businesses.
The Dayton Food Pantry is “volunteer-powered.” Volunteers range from the very young to elders, and come from all walks of life, united by the belief that no one should go hungry. Healthy Communities’ executive director Wendy Madson said, “Our hearts are full of gratitude to all the volunteers - they give so much of themselves. They’re so generous with their time, skills and labor. They are key to our mission to increase access to healthy food.”
