Dayton, Nevada – This week’s Dayton Food Pantry news includes recognition for three groups that recently contributed to the Pantry: Volunteers in Policing (V.I.P.s), Girl Scout Service Unit 625, and the Misfits Theater Group. Dayton Food Pantry manager Alie Trier said, “This Thanksgiving we were so grateful for the hundreds of turkeys and hams, side items, and checks donated by the community. Now we even have enough to provide more than 500 more familes with spiral hams for Christmas. Thank you awesome community members!”

Food Drive for Dayton Food Pantry Gets 2017 Off to a Good Start

A “Stuff a Police Car with Food Donations” event was held at Smith’s Grocery in Dayton on Jan. 7 for the Dayton Food Pantry.

Alie Trier, Dayton Food Pantry manager, said “I was amazed by all the cases of tuna and soup and other food donated — more than $4,500 worth of food, plus $612 in cash, was donated. We’re grateful for the hard work of Pantry volunteers and the Lyon Sheriff’s Department and the VIPs (Volunteers in Policing), and for the generosity of Smith’s Grocery Store, and residents of the Dayton area. Together, they made this event very successful.”

Dayton, Nevada – Healthy Communities Coalition’s Dayton Food Pantry, located on Enterprise Way and Highway 50 in Dayton, will remain open during its normal hours of 10a.m. - 4p.m. Monday through Thursday during the holidays.

The distribution of USDA Commodities will continue as normal on the 3rd Saturday of each month at Sutro Elementary from noon to 3pm.

Manager Alie Trier notes that volunteers of all ages are warmly welcomed.

Silver Stage Pantry Holiday Schedule

Silver Springs, Nevada - There will be special holiday events and hours for Healthy Communities Coalition's Silver Stage Food Pantry, located at 3595 Ramsey Weeks Cutoff in Silver Springs. Normally, the Pantry is open Monday through Friday from 10am until 4pm. However, the Pantry will close at noon on Friday December 16th, and at noon on Monday, December 19th. The Pantry will also be closed on Tuesday, December 27th from noon to 2:30pm for a delivery.

Dayton, Nevada – Alie Trier, Dayton Food Pantry director, was delighted with the results of a recent “Stuff a Police Car with Food Donations” event at Smith’s Grocery in Dayton. She exclaimed “Everyone was awesome!”

Volunteers in Policing, Lyon County Sheriff's Department, Smith's Grocery Store, donors, and community volunteers contributed to the event that resulted in the collection of $480 in cash plus over $700 worth of food items for the Dayton Food Pantry in just 4 hours on July 9th, 2016 at Smith's Grocery.

Nevada Humane Society program provides inmates with motherless kittens

Picture this. A group of male prisoners (big, burly guys) and a group of tiny, tabby kittens (weighing about three ounces), meeting each other for the first time at the Warm Springs Correctional Center. It’s early evening, the sun is setting and everyone is settling in for the night. It’s calm and quiet.

Suddenly the men are alert, turning all warm and fuzzy, cooing and using baby talk — they are melting at the sight of newborn kittens. Don’t judge, you would react this way too.

Rotary International president to visit Reno

In recognition of the announcement on July 24 that Nigeria has been declared polio free, Rotary International President K.R. "Ravi" Ravindran will visit the Truckee Meadows on Friday, August 14, meet with a Polio survivor and speak at a dinner in the President’s honor.

Jim Rackley wins 2014 Wayne E. Kirch Conservation Award


Jim Rackley of Winnemucca, Nev. has won the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioner’s 2014 Wayne E. Kirch Conservation award. Rackley’s commitment to Nevada’s wildlife resources was recognized during the March 20, 2015 Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioner’s meeting in Reno, Nevada, where he received the award.

Rackley was nominated for the award by Nevada Muleys a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the conservation of mule deer and their habitats in Nevada. According to the nomination, in 2014 Rackley had a “very impressive record of time and commitment to Nevada’s wildlife.”

Rotary Club of Carson City gears up for April's Beer and Pizza Championships

Now considered a Carson City spring tradition, the Rotary Club of Carson City will play host to its fourth annual Carson City Beer and Pizza Championships at the Carson Mall on Saturday, April 25.

The community is welcomed to taste, judge and enjoy finely crafter beer brewed from around the region and piping hot fresh pizza tossed and baked from local restaurants. Sixteen respected craft beer brewers and microbreweries will offer their top selections to attendees as they compete for awards during the Championships.

Rotary Club of Carson City Announces Winners of Second Annual Beer and Pizza Championships

CARSON CITY, NV - For the second year in a row, area residents came out by the hundreds to enjoy an evening of pizza, beer, music and fundraising for a good cause. The second annual Carson City Rotary Club Beer and Pizza Championships was a big success, raising more than $25,000 to assist with a number of community needs.
