Carson City arrests: Man breaks into home, helps himself to food

A 35-year-old man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of felony home invasion after allegedly breaking into a home and helping himself to food in the kitchen, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Jeffrey David Askew, listed as a transient, was taken into custody at 10:55 a.m. in the 1500 block of Truckee Drive.

According to the arrest report, deputies were called to a home where the homeowner reported that someone was inside. The deputies found the man in the garage and he was ordered to the ground. He told the arresting deputy that he broke the window and came into the house.

Inside the residence, deputies found severals stacks of papers and a Bible on the floor of the living room. The homeowner advised the items did not belong to them. In another room a deputy located a rock the size of a fist that went through the window, shattering it.

Inside the kitchen area, the man accessed drawers, appearing to have eaten food and then packaging food up to take with him when he left. The man then began to yell and scream profanities at deputies on scene. He was arrested for suspicion of home invasion. Bail: $20,000.

In other arrests:
— A 31-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Monday morning for suspicion of felony assault with deadly weapon charges after a four-hour standoff with sheriff's deputies at a residence in the 4000 block of Etta Place. See the story here.

— A Carson City man, Carlos Curiel-Partida, was booked Sunday into Carson City jail on a confirmed warrant alleging grand larceny of more than $3,500. The warrant was issued July 28, 2017 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $50,000.

— A 19-year-old Sparks man was arrested at 11:26 a.m. Sunday in the 400 block of Allouette Way for misdemeanor suspicion of driving under the influence and minor consuming alcohol. According to the arrest report, the man was located in the driver’s seat of a vehicle slumped over.

Carson City Fire Department had to knock several times to wake the man up and also had to tell him several times to put the car in park and not drive away.

He submitted to field sobriety tests showing impairment and provided a preliminary breath test of .122. At jail he refused evidentiary testing. A judge approved a search warrant for a blood draw, which was completed at 1:31 p.m. Bail: $1,379.

— A 49-year-old Carson City woman, Donna Lee Taylor, was arrested Sunday, 11:06 p.m. in the area of Gordon and Fairview for felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and disorderly conduct.

According to the arrest report, the woman was uncooperative and aggressive with officers who attempted to interview her following a domestic dispute. The woman’s husband said he was attempting to get the woman home but that she was intoxicated, according to the arrest report.

The woman was booked for disorderly after taking an aggressive stance against the officer. During transport to jail, the woman dropped four pills on the floor of the patrol car that she said were Tylenol for back pain. The pills were confirmed to be hydrocodone, the arrest report states. At jail she provided a breath sample of .208. Bail: $2,742.

— An 18-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 10:25 p.m. in the 2700 block of Gardner Lane for misdemeanor suspicion of battery. According to the arrest report, the victim was allegedly hit in the face by the man who is a client at a group home. The staff member did not have any injuries. Bail: $1,132.

— A 23-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Sunday, 12:52 p.m. in the 2900 block of Bunch Way for a misdemeanor failure to appear contempt of court warrant issued Sept. 5, 2017 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $500.

— A 38-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 3:30 a.m. in the 500 block of North Carson Street for a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant issued Oct. 16, 2017 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $215.

— A 49-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 4:20 a.m. in the 900 block of North Roop Street for misdemeanor suspicion of obstructing and riding a bicycle at night without a headlamp and rear lamp. Bail: $556.

— A 30-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday, 11:30 p.m. in the 4900 block of Highway 50 East for suspicion of domestic battery.

According to the arrest report, the man admitted to deputies of slapping the victim, throwing her onto a bed, stuffing a comforter in her mouth to silence her as she was yelling for help and then slapping her again. Deputies observed swelling on the left side of the victim’s face as well as a scratch on the left side of her jaw. Bail: $3,137.

— A 32-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday, 8:42 p.m. in the area of 20 College Parkway for misdemeanor suspicion of battery. According to the arrest report, the suspect admitted that he punched his neighbor in the nose while they were drinking at his apartment. Bail: $1,137.

— A 36-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Saturday, 11:01 a.m. in the 2300 block of Eastwood Drive for two counts suspicion of domestic battery. The woman allegedly kicked her husband in the chest as he attempted to stop her from battering her daughter. The daughter had scratch marks from fingernails and a large red area with vertical scratches in the thigh area. Bail: $6,274.

— Two Carson City men ages 22 and 34 were arrested Saturday, 2:11 p.m. at Walmart in the 3200 block of Market Street for suspicion of petit larceny. The men allegedly attempted to steal a jacket from the store and then attempt to return the jacket for cash. Both admitted to their actions and apologized for the crime. Bail: $352 each.

UPDATE 6 p.m.: Courtesy of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office: On May 3, 2024 at approximately 1430 hours, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies responded along with Central Lyon County, Carson City and Storey County Fire personnel to the area of 34 Newman Ln. for a report of motorhome on fire. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the fire had spread and multiple other abandoned vehicles caught fire as well. No one was hurt or injured during the incident. The incident is currently under investigation, which is being conducted by the Nevada State Fire Marshall’s Division.

UPDATE 2:38 p.m.: Firefighters from Storey are also now responding.

UPDATE 2:33 p.m.: Multiple vehicles on the property are engulfed in flame.

Around 2:15 p.m. a fire was reported at 34 Newman Lane in Mound House.

Firefighters from Carson City and Lyon County are enroute to the scene.

UPDATE 1:20 p.m.: According to Sheriff Ken Furlong, a student reported they saw a weapon. The incident was investigated and there was no weapon found. The lockdown has now been lifted and students are leaving the school.

UPDATE 1:15 p.m.: Update 05-03-24 at 1:15 p.m.
One student has reported an alleged weapon sighting. It has not been corroborated, but school officials and the sheriff’s office are investigating out an abundance of caution.

UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: The following update was provided by the district:

Carson High School was put on lockdown this afternoon around 12:15 p.m. No person was injured. There is an active situation being investigated in cooperation with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. We will provide more information as it becomes known. The school is secure. Do not go to the school. No entrances will be permitted at time. The district will provide updates every 30 minutes. Expect the next update at 1:15 p.m.

Carson High School is currently on a lockdown as of 12:40 p.m. Friday, but there has been no incident reported according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.

More than 48 Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America students attended the state conference in Sparks, Nev. this past week. In total, 38 of those students earned 74 “Top-10” placements in 30 separate events. Additionally, three CHS FBLA students took state with first-place finishes and 15 of them qualified for the National Business Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. this coming June.
