Dutch oven cooking demo, Hanging Tree hike at Mormon Station this weekend
Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa will host two events this weekend. On Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. there will be a Dutch oven cooking demonstration where park rangers will cook up a special Thanksgiving dish to kick off the coming holiday. The event is free and open to the public.
Learn the basics of Dutch oven cooking and how pioneers used the same cast iron techniques to cook meals in 1850. Dutch oven cooking is a great family activity, especially when camping. We will be serving samples until we run out of food, so come on down and enjoy a nice fall day at the park.
On Sunday park guests can learn about “the blackest episode in the history of Nevada" and hear the tale of how “Nevada justice” was carried out in Genoa on the early morning of November 25, 1897 at the notorious hanging tree.
The hike will start in front of the museum at 2:30 p.m. and go to the hanging tree and back, stopping by some beautiful historic buildings on the way. The walk is about a mile roundtrip, with the majority of the hike taking place on the side of Genoa Lane. Please come prepared with water, warm clothes and appropriate shoes. Please call 775-782-2590 to make a reservation for this program. It is free and open to the public.
Mormon Station is located 20 minutes south of Carson City via Hwy 395, about one hour south of Reno, and approximately 20 minutes from South Lake Tahoe via Hwy 207. For more information, call 775-782-2590 or email at mormonstation@park.nv.gov.
Be sure to visit the log cabin museum and see artifacts used by early pioneers. Kids are free; adults are $1.
The passport challenge continues: The Nevada State Parks Passport Booklet is now available and may be picked up at any state park. Visitors who have their booklets stamped at 15 different parks will earn a free annual pass to all Nevada State Parks. The booklet, which serves as a travel aid as well as travelogue for park visitors, includes photos, a description of each park, lists of amenities, travel journal pages and spaces for validation stamps which have been designed to reflect each unique state park.
