It's National Voter Registration Day, here's how you can register in minutes to vote in Carson City
Today in Carson City and beyond, it is National Voter Registration Day.
Did you know that in Nevada, you can register to vote online in only a few minutes, or in-person at the polls?
This year, while voting may look different for some due to the majority mail-in voting system put in place due to the pandemic, voting machines will still be available during the early voting period as well as on the Nov. 3 Election Day.
This year due to the COVID-19 shut down and consequent all mail-in voting system, the state has provided mail-in voters with the ability to sign up for ballot tracking and ballot status alert, and can log on to the Secretary of State’s voter services website to confirm their ballot has been received.
If you are not registered to vote, it only takes a few minutes on www.RegisterToVoteNV.gov
To register to vote in Nevada, a person must be a United States citizen, be at least 18 years of age on or before Election Day, and have resided in their Nevada county for at least 30 days.
Individuals may register to vote online, at any Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles office, at their county clerk or registrar of voters' office, at various social service agencies, and on college campuses.
The Secretary of State’s Office would like to remind all voters that attempting to cast a vote twice, once through mail-in and again through in-person voting, will be subject to prosecution.
“Voters should not try to confirm the status of their mail ballot by attempting to vote in person after they have already voted by mail,” a press release states. “Attempting to vote more than once in the same election is a serious crime that carries a penalty of up to 4 years in prison.”
While September is National Voter Registration month, today is National Voter Registration day, and what better day to register to vote?
“National Voter Registration Month is a time to promote the various means available for eligible Nevadans to register to vote, including online, by mail, or in person with either the county election official or at a community voter registration drive,” said Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske. “Voting is a right and privilege given to United States citizens that should not be taken for granted. Nevadans need to take the opportunity to make their voices heard by electing local, state, and federal officials through the process of voting.”
The nation's Secretaries of State established September as National Voter Registration Month in 2002 as a non-partisan means of encouraging voter participation and increasing awareness about state requirements and deadlines for voting. Nevada has joined the effort by proclaiming the month of September as Voter Registration Month.
In the month of August, the Secretary of State’s office reported a 2.24 percent increase in active registered voters in Nevada, with 36,846 residents registering to vote, for a total of 1.68 million state wide.
In Nevada, 38 percent of registered voters are Democrat, 32 percent are Republican, and 23 percent are Nonpartisan.
