Carson City Mint Coin Show strikes silver and gold at Nevada State Museum

Collectors from as far as Florida and New York are in Carson City this weekend to gawk and potentially buy priceless pieces of historic minted coins and printed paper money in what has become a must-attend event for serious numismatists.

The Carson City Mint Coin Show at the Nevada State Museum runs through 4:30 today and starts up again at 8:30 Saturday morning. The show offers something for everyone, including those who like to observe the rituals and routines of the collectors who carry specialized magnifying devices and who, if you ask them, can tell you fascinating stories about the history of American currency.

Held both days from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the show features 27 dealers, free appraisals and kids activities.

Joining tomorrow's festivities will be the Mile High Jazz Band who wll perform as the Coin Show Quartet from noon to 1 p.m.; the trio will provide entertainment while the Friends of the Nevada State Museum will sell cold drinks and treats.

Throughout the event, Historic Coin Press No. 1, will be operating much like it did in 1870, but now stamping out Pony Express Commemorative Medallions instead of coins.

More than $3,000 in raffle prizes will be available, including the grand prize drawing at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Raffle tickets are now on sale for the grand prize, a precious 20 ounce silver bar embedded with two one ounce .999 fine 150th Anniversary Pony Express medallions. Fabricated at Northwest Territorial Mint/Medallic Art and sponsored by John Etten of Heritage Collectables, this unique, one-of-a-kind prize is valued at $ 1,500.
