Carson City Library presents 'Making of a Cello' performance, talk July 11
The Carson City Symphony Association and the Carson City Library present a talk and demonstration on "The Making of a Cello" by Symphony cellist Becky Crowe on Thursday, July 11, 6 to 8 p.m., in the auditorium of the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop Street in Carson City.
The talk is appropriate for all ages, and admission is free.
Crowe will show the patterns, forms, materials, and tools she uses, followed by an informal question-and-answer discussion. Using one of her completed cellos, Lou Groffman, principal cellist of the Carson City Symphony, will play a piece to demonstrate the sound of the instrument. Library books on related subjects, such as acoustics, woodworking, and music history, will be displayed and available to the audience to peruse and borrow.
After apprenticeships in violin-making with Paul Schuback, in Portland, Oregon, and in violin repair with Brian Kempton in Sacramento, California, Crowe has built two violins, one bass, three cellos - including the one she plays in the Carson City Symphony, and three guitars. She is currently working on a smaller cello that she plans to donate to the Symphony's youth program, Strings in the Schools, and will use this work-in-progress for the demonstration.
This event is supported with public funding through a grant from Nevada Humanities. For information about Carson City Symphony events, call the Symphony at 775-883-4154 or see www.CCSymphony.com. For information about Carson City Library events, call 775-887-2244.
