Sheriff: Reported crimes down in Carson City during event-filled weekend

With tens of thousands of people in Carson City last weekend for local events including Taste of DownTown, the Carson City Airport Open House and the Father's Day Powwow, law enforcement arrest records show a relatively quiet weekend.

"We had an excellent weekend and it goes to show that when there are positive family and community events happening around town, the amount of crimes reported falls very low from all points, north to south, east to west and downtown," said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The following arrests were made:

A 59-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 2800 block of Dori Way, June 16, 710 p.m. He faces a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery. According to the arrest report, the man reportedly choked and punched his daughter with a closed fist after getting into an argument about car keys.

The daughter said she punched her father, who she said was drunk. The woman had redness and and a small scratch on her right cheek and redness around her neck.

The man said his daughter was the aggressor, that she got "all 5150" and started screaming at him about the car keys. He said he pushed but didn't choke his daughter and blamed the redness on his daughter's neck as being done by someone else. Bail: $3,157.

— A 40-year-old Carson City woman was arrested June 15 and faces a felony burglary charge. Tara Leann Steinman, was arrested in the 2600 block of Sherman Lane on a warrant issued June 13 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $20,000.

— A 32-year-old Carson City woman faces a charge of domestic battery. She was arrested June 16, 5:32 a.m. in the 800 block of Travis. According to the arrest report, the woman became angry at her live-in boyfriend for not going out with her on her birthday.

The boyfriend told officers the woman came into his bedroom and said she wanted to "mess around." He told officers he declined and pushed her away. The boyfriend said the woman got on top of him and began hitting him. When he put his arms in front of him to protect himself, she bit into his forearms, the report states.

The man said the woman told him to "pack his s***" and leave. As the man was doing so he told authorities she attacked him again, following him into the laundry room area. The man was bleeding from the mouth, had a scratch above his left eye and a knot above his right eye, deputies report. As she was hitting him, the man told deputies he put his arm around her neck to get a hold of her and pushed her out of the laundry room.

The woman said her boyfriend attempted to choke her and said she may have bit him when he was choking her, according to the arrest report. The bite wounds received on the man were on the outside of his forearms, which was inconsistent to the woman's story, the arrest report states.

It was determined the woman was the primary aggressor. As officers prepared to take her to jail, she yelled: "Who the hell is in my house" and then began screaming, and resisting. Inside the patrol vehicle, the woman yelled, spit, and kicked the back seat. Jail deputies placed a spit hood over her head as she would not stop spitting, the arrest report states. She was placed into a safety cell. Bail: $3,137.

— A 27-year-old Carson City woman and a 25-year-old man were arrested June 16, 7:31 p.m. at Robinson and Carson streets. Both face misdemeanor drug charges. According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to the area after a report of a man and woman arguing outside a casino.

The couple told officers that they were just arguing with each other and there was no physical violence made by one another. The man was wearing a backpack and the woman carrying a purse and duffel bag. Officers asked if they could search the bags and both agreed.

During a background search, dispatch advised officers that the man had two confirmed warrants for his arrest — violation of a suspended sentence. He was cuffed and placed in the back of a patrol vehicle.

Officers checked inside the backpack and discovered a brown-colored pipe that smelled of marijuana. The officer then looked inside the woman's purse and found a clear glass pipe with burnt residue commonly used to ingest methamphetamine. The woman was placed into custody.

She faces a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail: $1,137. He faces the two violation of suspended sentence charges, (failure to complete intensive treatment as ordered by the court) and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail: $7,137.

— A 21-year-old Carson City man was arrested June 16, 12:07 a.m. at Walmart, 27000 block of Market Street. He faces a misdemeanor charge of petit larceny. He is accused of shoplift a mini-keyboard, valued at $89.98 that he put in his pants and attempted to leave the store. Bail: $352.

— A 18-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Monday, June 17, 12:02 a.m. at Arrowhead Drive and Highway 50 East and faces four misdemeanor charges including DUI drugs and alcohol, reckless driving, speeding and violation of conditions.

According to the arrest report, officers stopped a Hyundai after observing it do approximately 70 mph on Deer Run Road.

Officers caught up to the vehicle and observed that when the light turned green, the vehicle accelerated northbound onto Arrowhead Drive then abruptly drove off the road and began spinning donuts in the dirt lot north of Arrowhead Drive, according to the arrest report.

Officers stopped the vehicle and made contact with the 18-year-old driver who smelled of alcohol and had red, watery eyes. The officer asked the man to step out of the vehicle to perform a series of standardized field sobriety tests, to which he complied.

During the question portion, the man told officers that he had smoked two "bowls" of marijuana 2 to 3 hours prior. He showed signs of impairment during the standardized field sobriety tests. He was asked to provide a breath sample which showed him to be illegal per se, according to the arrest report. Bail: $4,912.

— A 39-yer-old Carson City man was arrested June 16, 11:19 p.m. at the intersection of Fairview and Highway 50 East. The man was stopped for a moving violation. During a wants and warrants check, officers discovered an outstanding failure to appear traffic warrant. Bail: $212.

— A 23-year-old Carson City man was arrested June 16, 3:25 a.m. in the 100 block of Telegraph. He faces a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession of obstructing a peace officer.

While officers were at a bar doing a follow-up investigation, the man was standing in front of the bar holding a bottle of beer in one hand and a cell phone in the other, and told the officer: "Don't you have anything better to do," according to the arrest report. The man was asked for his identification, which he then told the officer that he was recording their conversation.

The officer told the man that it is fine to record the conversation, but that he still has to provide identification. The man handed the officer a piece of paper and told him that he did not have to provide an ID. The man told the officer his name. The man was arrested for obstructing. While doing a search, officers recovered a plastic baggie with marijuana in the right coin pocket of his pants. Bail: $1,114.

— A 51-year-old Carson City woman was arrested June 16, 12:02 a.m. at East Proctor and Stewart streets. She faces a misdemeanor DUI charge. Officers observed the vehicle the woman was driving blocking the sidewalk and propped on the top concrete parking bumpers.

The woman was slumped over the wheel of the vehicle and appeared to be asleep. The officer knocked on the window which startled the woman awake. She opened the door which emitted an odor of alcohol.

The woman told officers she had been consuming wine, the arrest report states. The woman refused to submit to a standardized field sobriety test and a preliminary breath test. She was taken to jail where she again refused to participate in a blood or breath test. A phlebotomist was called after the arresting officer contacted a judge and was granted a telephonic search warrant for a blood draw. Bail: $1,132.

— A 38-year-old Carson City man was arrested June 15, 8:30 p.m. in the 200 block of North Carson Meadows for being in violation of a protection order, a misdemeanor. The man called a woman and texted her regarding their children, in which he said he wanted to see and that was the only reason why he made cell phone contact. Bail: $1,137.

— A 48-year-old Carson City man was arrested June 14, 9:57 p.m. in the 1500 block of Sharon Drive. He faces a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery. The man's wife said the couple had an argument over a woman and advances he had made at her while the two had been drinking. The wife asked the woman to leave and the man became angry at his wife in which she said he pushed her to the ground, ripped her shirt and slapped her on the sides.
The man told officers that it was the woman who made advances on him, not him making advances on the woman. He submitted to a PBT test where he blew a .301. Bail: $3,132.

— A 24-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 400 block of Saliman Road on June 15, 5:01 a.m. He faces a misdemeanor charge of obstructing an officer and being in violation of release conditions.
