Nick Larsen's 'Thick Dreams' presented by Nevada Arts Council
By Teresa Moiola / Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs
The Nevada Arts Council presents "Thick Dreams," a series of mixed media artwork by Nick Larsen, in its Carson City office now through June 3 as part of the Office eXhibition Series. An artist talk and reception will be held Thursday, April 14 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
In "Thick Dreams," Larsen assembles piles, pictures, residue and scraps to form structures that salute his youth and suggest a schematic for what is to follow. In these assemblages, the wear of a previous life is often visible, suggesting a level of nostalgia that isn’t diluted by sentimentality.
According to Larsen, “as you age, a great deal gets left behind and the things that remain with you take on a new level of significance. These saved objects are no longer just souvenirs, keepsakes or relics, they evolve into something more useful; the highlights from the old become the foundation for the new.”
Nick Larsen incorporates both two-dimensional printmaking techniques, particularly screenprinting and photoletterpress, and three-dimensional sculptural materials. The themes of his recent series, "Thick Dreams," are prioritization, arrangement and the defense of one’s post-youth ideals. Recurring concerns in Larsen’s work deals with nostalgia, the tactile quality of materials, the West and ideas of settling/settlement.
Nick Larsen received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2007. He has exhibited widely throughout Reno including two solo exhibitions at the Sierra Arts Gallery and Never Ender Gallery; and in group exhibitions at the Nevada Museum of Art, the Sheppard Gallery and the Holland Project Arts and Music Center. Larsen was the Associate Director at Durham Press, an established fine art print publisher in Durham, Pennsylvania. In late 2008, he moved back to Reno to start his own publishing imprint, Sleepytime Projects, which focuses on serial publications conceived as artworks; including books, DVDs, audio recordings and print portfolios.
The OXS gallery is located in Nevada Arts Council office at 716 N. Carson Street (intersection of Washington Street), Suite A, in Carson City and is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Call (775) 687-6680 for details. The OXS gallery is managed by the Artist Services Program.
