Carson City arrests: Man jailed for felony battery causing substantial bodily harm

A 24-year-old man was arrested for felony battery Thursday after allegedly punching, kicking and beating a man who was attempting to help calm him down after he was being detained by Walmart security, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Timothy Russell, a transient, was taken into custody at 5:10 p.m. for suspicion of battery causing substantial bodily harm. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of petit larceny for attempting to steal a bottle of liquor valued at $38.42.

According to the arrest report, deputies contacted two loss prevention employees who stated Russell had stole a bottle of liquor and attempted to leave the store without paying. They stated the suspect became agitated when they stopped him.

A third person, the victim, intervened and attempted to get Russell to calm down. The employees stated Russell attacked the man by shoving him to the ground, then kicking and punching him several times.

The victim was taken to the hospital. He confirmed to a deputy that Russell had battered him, unprovoked, and that he wished to press charges for battery. The victim stated he has numerous medical problems and recently had his spine fused and was wearing a back brace at the time he was battered. Bail: $15,352.

In other arrests:
— A 46-year-old Sparks man, Antonio Nicola Sciafani, was arrested Thursday, 2:42 p.m. in the area of Lompa Lane and Menlo Drive for four felony drug charges including suspicion of possession of controlled substance for sale, possession of a forged instrument and two counts possession of a controlled substance. He also faces three misdemeanor charges: Cell phone violation, failure to changed his driver’s license address and not wearing a seatbelt.

According to the arrest report, officers investigating recovered a gallon sized plastic bag, tied at both ends, that contained 35 pills inside, including 21 Acetaminophen and Hydrocodone Bitartrate pills, and 14 Oxycodone pills, which are both considered high potential for abuse, according to the arrest report.
In the man’s wallet deputies recovered a counterfeit $100 bill. The man was read his Miranda rights and told officer he knew the bill was fake, according to the arrest report. Bail: $25,256.

— A 22-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Friday morning in the area of Telegraph and Stewart streets for suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon, a gross misdemeanor, DUI first offense and possession of a firearm while intoxicated.

According to the arrest report, a deputy stopped the man after observing him yelling in front of a bar and then getting into a vehicle and driving away.

The deputy observed the man showed signs of intoxication. The man admitted he had been drinking several Coors Light beers, the arrest report states.
The deputy asked the man if there were any weapons in the vehicle. The man replied he had a handgun concealed in his left leg inside his boot. The man stated he did not have a concealed weapons permit, which was verified by dispatch.

He was read his Miranda rights and agreed to speak. He consented to standardized field sobriety tests in which he showed signs of impairment. He submitted to a preliminary breath test with a result of .192. He was arrested for suspicion of DUI. At jail he consented to evidentiary breath tests with results of .180 and .169. Bail: $4,911.

— A 23-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday, 11:42 p.m. in the area of Stewart and Little streets for misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, obstructing a police officer, speeding (11-15 over), failure to maintain a lane of traffic and not using a turn signal. Bail: $1,810.

— A 26-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday, 12:13 a.m. in the area of Stewart and Ninth streets for misdemeanor suspicion of DUI and driving without a valid license. According to the arrest report, the man was stopped for speeding, 53 mph in a 35 mph zone.

The man told the officer he didn’t realize he was driving that fast. The officer saw a beer bottle cap on his center console and asked where the beer was.

The man pulled it from the front of the passenger floor board. He told the officer he had around 5 beers and that he would perform standardized field sobriety tests. He also informed the officer he didn’t have a driver’s license.

He showed signs of impairment on the tests. He provided a breath sample of .146 and was arrested. He provided two evidentiary breath samples at jail with results of .111 and .108. Bail: $1,329.

— A 23-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday, 10:53 p.m. in the area of Roop and William streets for two misdemeanor warrants issued out of Carson City Justice Court. He was also cited for driving with a non-resident license. Bail: $562.

— A 58-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday, 1:31 p.m. in the 3400 block of Highway 50 East for a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant issued March 3, 2017 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $955.

— A 45-year-old Douglas County woman was arrested Thursday, 7:29 p.m. in the area of South Carson Street near Topsy Lane for a misdemeanor warrant, driving with suspended registration and having no proof of insurance. Bail: $1,024. A second woman, age 39, was also arrested for two misdemeanor warrants out of Douglas County. Her bail was $1,000 for each warrant.

— A 32-year-old Dayton woman was arrested Thursday, 6:11 p.m. in the area of College Parkway and Cinnabar Drive for a misdemeanor warrant issued Feb. 25, 2017 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $283.

A 44-year-old man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of unlawful occupancy of real property and violation of a suspended sentence, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report. The man was occupying the home of a deceased person without permission.

UPDATE 3:11 PM: The fire in the 1400 block of Monte Rosa Drive was contained to the garage and was knocked down quickly, according to CCFD Battalion Chief Jon Pedrini. The fire did not extend to the main structure. No one was home and there were no injuries. The cause is under investigation.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called late Monday morning to a structure fire in the 1400 block of Monte Rosa Drive.

Nevada Division of Forestry state nursery is open for business beginning Thursday, May 9. When we first bought our home in 1988 with its 2.5 acres, there were some poplars, pines, blue spruce, willows, and grass, but little else. I soon discovered the state nursery and filled the yard with flowering shrubs and other plants. I added lilacs, sand cherries, golden and Nevada currants, sumacs, Apache plumes, and incense cedars.

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested a Dayton man Saturday for possession of child pornography. During the investigation, officers also learned the man was a local little league coach.

An 18-year-old Carson City man was arrested at a local diner after allegedly stealing a car from a used car lot two days prior to test drive it.

Members of the Rotary Club of Carson City will learn how its annual Educational Grant has helped local students at the club’s next meeting. Carson School District K-12 Curriculum & Assessment Coordinator Brittany Witter received the club’s Carson City School District’s Professional Development Center Grant last year with the goal of funding the “Literacy and Love of Reading through Social Studies” project.

UPDATE 6 p.m.: Courtesy of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office: On May 3, 2024 at approximately 1430 hours, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies responded along with Central Lyon County, Carson City and Storey County Fire personnel to the area of 34 Newman Ln. for a report of motorhome on fire. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the fire had spread and multiple other abandoned vehicles caught fire as well. No one was hurt or injured during the incident. The incident is currently under investigation, which is being conducted by the Nevada State Fire Marshall’s Division.

UPDATE 2:38 p.m.: Firefighters from Storey are also now responding.

UPDATE 2:33 p.m.: Multiple vehicles on the property are engulfed in flame.

Around 2:15 p.m. a fire was reported at 34 Newman Lane in Mound House.

Firefighters from Carson City and Lyon County are enroute to the scene.

UPDATE 1:20 p.m.: According to Sheriff Ken Furlong, a student reported they saw a weapon. The incident was investigated and there was no weapon found. The lockdown has now been lifted and students are leaving the school.

UPDATE 1:15 p.m.: Update 05-03-24 at 1:15 p.m.
One student has reported an alleged weapon sighting. It has not been corroborated, but school officials and the sheriff’s office are investigating out an abundance of caution.

UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: The following update was provided by the district:

Carson High School was put on lockdown this afternoon around 12:15 p.m. No person was injured. There is an active situation being investigated in cooperation with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. We will provide more information as it becomes known. The school is secure. Do not go to the school. No entrances will be permitted at time. The district will provide updates every 30 minutes. Expect the next update at 1:15 p.m.

Carson High School is currently on a lockdown as of 12:40 p.m. Friday, but there has been no incident reported according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Two School Resource Officers are on scene investigating why the alarm went off.
