The Gift of Creativity
Since joining the Brewery Arts Center a month ago, I've had the pleasure of enjoying some memorable performances at the Maize Harris Jesse Black Box Theater. It left me wondering what took me so long to get on the BAC bandwagon.
First there were the haunting Celtic airs of kilted bagpipe player Sean Cummings, accompanied by harpist Anne Roos.
Then there was the Proscenium Players' "Evening at the Improv" during which everyone present, including audience members, had a chance to get their creativity on. Admission is free for this monthly event, which features some extremely spontaneous young improv artists.
Reno's Brüka Theatre trekked south for a special performance of their NV150 show, in which they told the story of Nevada's century and a half of hilarity. Little wonder that all performances of this show were sold out on Brüka's home stage.
The month of November ended with a foot-stomping hoedown by Strange on the Range, a fun-loving four piece group from Reno that's billed as specializing in hot and rowdy bluegrass and swing music. Scott the banjo player and Zeke on the mandolin got round after round of rapturous applause.
I believe that some well-deserved applause should also go to the Black Box theater itself, which has amazing acoustics, and to the Brewery Arts Center's all-volunteer staff as well. In my estimation, they have created a community treasure of immeasurable value.
The $8 price of admission for BAC members at most Black Box Theater events makes this a uniquely valuable venue for art and music lovers of limited means, like myself. The food, beer and wine available at Foodies Bystro can be taken into the theater, where tables are available along the front.
I used to think of the Brewery Arts Center as a place where fancy people paid fancy prices to watch fancy performers I could never afford to see myself. I've now come to see it as a showcase for much more down-to-earth art and experience that I find irresistable. Just one more reason I feel lucky to live here.
If you're looking for a Christmas gift idea, give some thought to BAC gift certificates. They can be used for memberships, purchases at the Artisans Store, show tickets and class registrations. Think of it as an investment in what's best about this wonderfully creative community.
