St. Peter's Throwing Sock Hop, by Holly Golly
A Buddy Holly Sock Hop will resurrect rock ‘n roll and reprise the fabulous ‘50s for the young and young-at-heart come April 10th at Carson City’s Brewery Arts Center.
Folks who frolicked through the Buddy Holly era, and anyone who relived it through reminiscence flicks such as “American Graffiti” or retro TV shows like “Happy Days,” will revel in timeless memories at this community outreach event hosted by parishioners of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Carson City.
Bob Reid and the Rave-Ons will play live renditions of rollicking rock that captivated generations and still resonate today, including the Buddy Holly hits Peggy Sue, Rave On and That’ll Be the Day. The Rave Ons are Reid on keyboards and some vocals, Brad Lund, bass and lead vocals, Joe Shelley, sax, and Herbie Weihskopf, drums.
The dance and food/drink frolic, a fund raising event to support ongoing and community outreach programs at St. Peter’s, will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 10th, and run until 10 p.m.
Décor, food and drinks – as well as records interspersed with the live music – will transport attendees into a magic world a half century away but as near as the culture it spawned since. The evening will evoke the era around Feb. 3, 1959, known in rock circles as the day the music died. But it didn’t.
Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and “Big Bopper” Richardson were killed in an airplane crash after playing Clear Lake, Iowa’s Surf Ballroom, cutting short careers of artists who, respectively, wowed fans with That’ll Be The Day, La Bamba and Chantilly Lace.
Little more than a decade later, Don McLean captured the angst and end of innocence that followed the crash by penning his lyrical tribute to Buddy Holly called American Pie, which featured the lamentation line about the day the music died.
Proof that it didn’t, however, will be on display as the Buddy Holly Sock Hop transports dancers into a dalliance with beat-laden music. Old and young alike will become malt shop teeny boppers ready to shed penny loafers because sock hops rule.
