Carson City Sheriff's arrest log: Man allegedly bites minor, booked on felony child abuse

A 48 year-old Carson City man was arrested early Saturday morning at 12:12 a.m. in the 3500 block of Northgate Lane for suspicion of felony child abuse, a Carson City sheriff's deputy reported.

Derek Scott Clinkenbeard was taken into custody following a sheriff's deputy investigation into allegations that he had bitten a minor child.

According to the arrest report, Clinkenbeard's child had a friend staying overnight at his house. The friend's mother filed a report with law enforcement after Clinkenbeard called her around 9 p.m. Friday night to come pick up her child.

The victim's parent told a sheriff's deputy that when she asked if everything was okay, Clinkenbeard responded that he was unsure and that he was done with her, the report states.

The mother said that when she arrived to pick up her child, Clinkenbeard told her that he did not bite the victim, but did not provide any further details when asked. He just said she could ask her child for more information and told the parent he was done dealing with her, the report said.

On the drive home, the mother said she asked her child what happened and the victim stated Clinkenbeard had gotten angry when the children woke him up. He grabbed and bit her before throwing her off his bed, the report said.

A bite mark on the victim's chest was discovered by the mother, who then contacted law enforcement. A sheriff's deputy arrived at the victim's residence to take the report. The victim stated she and her friend, Clinkenbeard's child, were in the bathroom preparing to dye their hair. When they went to ask Clinkenbeard for gloves, he was asleep on his bed.

The victim said she pressed on Clinkenbeard's arm to try and wake him up and he responded by reaching over and grabbing the victim's arms, the report said, pulling her on top of him and biting her on the chest.

The victim said Clinkenbeard then threw her off the bed, causing her back to hit the wall. She ran out of the room crying and became afraid because she said the suspect had also threatened to kill her if he saw her again, the report said.

When the deputy asked the victim if the suspect smelled funny during the incident, she reported she had seen an empty alcohol container in the garbage and believed he had been drinking that night.

Photos were taken of the bite mark, which was consistent with human teeth.

Law enforcement made subsequent contact with Clinkenbeard at his residence. He denied biting the victim, stating she was a problem child and he did not want her back over to his house, the report said.

Clinkenbeard further stated that his child and the victim had been running down Northgate Lane in their pajamas, and he had to go after them. He told the deputy that he did not remember waking up or what happened when he woke up, but he said he was "pretty sure" he did not bite the victim.

The suspect provided a voluntary preliminary breath test (PBT), which yielded breath-alcohol content (BAC) of .120 percent, according to the arrest report.

Clinkenbeard was handcuffed and placed in custody. A records check through Carson City Dispatch showed he was on active probation with the Carson City Department of Alternative Sentencing (DAS) with a no drinking clause.

When contacted, DAS requested he be arrested for violating his suspended sentence, the report said.

He was uncooperative while in the patrol vehicle, the report said, yelling at the deputy and leaning away to prevent being secured by the seatbelt.

Once at Carson City Jail, Clinkenbeard was escorted to a holding cell where he began fighting with detention staff. He was later placed in a secured cell, the report said. Bail: $41,000.

According to the report, two sheriff's deputies conducting a patrol sweep of the area in search of a burglary suspect observed a male subject matching the physical description of the suspect that had run from them earlier Friday night.

When deputies made contact with the subject and asked if they could speak with him, he started to run and throw items from his pockets. A foot pursuit ensued, lasting about two minutes before the subject stopped and got on the ground upon being ordered by the pursuing deputies, the report said.

He was detained in handcuffs and Mirandized. The subject identified himself and stated he ran because he believed he had a warrant out for his arrest. No warrant was found on records check through dispatch; however, the subject was on active probation through DAS. Deputies contacted his DAS officer, who requested he be arrested for violating conditions of his probation, the report said.

He was transported to the Carson City Jail and booked without incident. Bail: $3,412.
