Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada Hosts First Annual Indigenous Peoples’ Heritage Day Saturday
The First Annual Indigenous People's Heritage Day will be held at the Northern Nevada Children’s Museum in Carson City, located at 813 N. Carson St. tomorrow, Saturday Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
This free event is sure to be an exciting one, where people of all ages will learn about our region’s native peoples and become immersed in Washiw Tribe culture.
“Since November is National Native American Heritage month, the Board (of the Museum) wanted to do something new to share the rich culture of the Washiw Tribe with the community," said Museum Director Christine Brandon.
The Museum will be transformed to allow guests a glimpse into the multifaceted world of the Washiw Tribe. Although the event is open to all ages, it is going to be one you don’t want your kids to miss. Children learn best hands-on and the Museum is going to give them some wonderfully rare opportunities to stoke their imagination.
Children will learn how to make traditional acorn soup, cordage, baskets, nets and traps, among other crafts.
Story-telling will be performed and attendees will have an opportunity to receive a free Wahsiw Legends book. There will be Pine Nut gathering in the pretend pine tree forest, song and dance and even traditional Washiw clothes to play dress-up in!
“Children are a growing part of our community and I think it’s important for young children to learn about all peoples here so that the history stays alive,” said Brandon.
This event will be one both you and your little ones will look forward for years to come. The museum has hopes that the Nevada State Museum will join with them in future years, considering the large amount of artifacts they have.
The museum couldn't be happier with the beginning of a great partnership between the Washiw Tribe and the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada.
