Commemorative cups on sale as part of Sustainable Nevada Day

CARSON CITY — GreenUP!, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides environmental education to businesses announced that Nevada Day commemorative cups are now on sale for $10 at the Nevada Day store located at 716 N. Carson Street.
Nevada Day organizers and greenUP! collaborated to create a stainless-steel beverage cup and 18 Carson Street restaurants and establishments will provide a $1 discount on alcohol and other beverages for patrons that bring their cups with them. The cups will be sold on the parade route in front of the Adams Hub for Innovation during the parade for $12. Use of the stainless-steel cups will help reduce the plastics waste that litters Carson Street along the Nevada Day parade route.
A group effort is underway to make our Nevada Day parade a more sustainable event. A Nevada Day green team was assembled to find ways to reduce waste at the event and volunteers are being sought for the Nevada Day parade and festivities on October 26.
“This year’s event theme is Nevada Counties – 100 Years,” said Ken Hamilton, Executive Director for the Nevada Day organization. “Nevada Day belongs to everyone and we ask the public to take part in making it a sustainable event. What better way to celebrate and to honor Nevada and all its counties than by taking steps to preserve our beautiful state for future generations.”
Waste Management is donating recycling stations for the Nevada Day parade and we ask the public to recycle rather than create more waste. Water filling stations are being provided by the Incline Village General Improvement District as part of their Drink Tahoe Tap campaign.
The Nevada Day green team asks that the public bring their own reusable water containers rather than purchase single use plastic water bottles at the parade so that we can reduce the plastic waste that is littering our oceans, our public lands and our landfills. Muscle Powered in partnership with Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space and Carson Demolition will assemble a trash mob to pick up trash and sort out recyclables the day after the parade. Muscle Powered provides clean up services at many events throughout the year as a public service. Carson Demolition is providing its truck and dumpster to haul the trash to the landfill. Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is helping to recruit volunteers, provide dumpsters and designate trash pickup locations.
Nevada Day green team tee-shirts (sponsored by the Carson City Downtown Business Association) will be provided to volunteers that assist with sustainability efforts on October 26th. Girl Scouts of Sierra Nevada Troop 188 from Spanish Springs and a Boy Scouts troop will be among the volunteers on Nevada Day.
