Nevada Humane Society offers sneak peek of new Carson City Shelter
Construction workers are putting the finishing touches on the new $4 million Carson City Animal Shelter in preparation for the facility's Oct. 8 grand opening.
Work on the 11,000 square-foot facility, located at 549 Airport Road near the intersection of Butti Way, started nearly a year ago with ground breaking last October.
Funded, in part, by the city’s one-eighth cent sales tax increase approved by the Board of Supervisors in 2014, the Carson City Animal Shelter project was also paid for through contributions made by Carson Animal Services Initiative (CASI), the Nevada Humane Society, as well as grants received from Maddie’s Fund and the Petco Foundation.
“We are proud of our work on the new shelter,” said Mark Beauchamp, co-founder of Shaheen Beauchamp Builders, LLC, the project's general contractor. “Not only is this a beautiful facility worthy of its mission, it is a major piece in the current renaissance of Carson City infrastructure, and, as a no-kill shelter, it is a model for other cities to follow suit.”
Since Carson City's partnership with the Nevada Humane Society (NHS) was forged two years ago, the emphasis on animal control has shifted sharply to greater life-saving efforts and the end-goal of a no-kill community.
The Carson City Animal Services shelter, under NHS management since 2014, has since actively promoted adoption over euthanasia, keeping consistent with the private, nonprofit organization's stated goal of fostering a no-kill community.
The brand-new Carson City Animal Services facility replaces an existing 50-year-old structure, located on the corner of Butti Way and Fairview Drive, which Carson City Public Works has said suffered from multiple structural deficiencies.
With room for only 32 dogs, 33 cats and no space for any exotic pets, the old shelter has also been insufficient for the number of animals that require care and need to find new homes.
Located on a 1.6 acre parcel, the new facility is substantially larger, accommodating as many as 134 dogs, 104 cats and seven exotic pets.
Other features of the new Carson City Animal Shelter are an on-site spay and neuter clinic, adoption play spaces, and two large animal corrals with 25-foot-by-25-foot metal covers that offer protection from the elements.
The public is invited to attend a ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration at the new Carson City Animal Shelter on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The grand opening will continue Sunday, Oct. 9, from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
