Carson City weather: Temps near 100 or more this week, haze from fires
The summer heat will settle into the Carson City region this week, with daytime temperatures in the upper 90s to 100 or higher Monday through Wednesday in the capital city and Carson Valley and 100-plus in Dayton and Virginia City, according to the National Weather Service.
A Heat Advisory is in effect Tuesday through Thursday for the Carson City region. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are also a possibility this week. The haze seen around western Nevada is from the Ferguson Fire burning near Yosemite National Park.
With the threat of afternoon thunderstorms looming for western and northern Nevada, conditions become drier Monday and Tuesday behind the wave with isolated chances of a thunderstorm for southern Lyon and Mineral counties in Nevada and Mono County in California.
Meanwhile, temperatures will rise well above seasonal averages with Tuesday being the hottest day. Extra caution is advised to sensitive populations and those expecting to be outdoors for extended periods of time as high temperatures top 100 degrees for most western Nevada valleys, 105-plus in the Basin and Range, and around 90 degrees for Sierra valleys.
The weather service advises to have plenty of water on hand and know the signs of heat related illness.
As for the extended forecast, the upper ridge will still be centered over the Great Basin Wednesday before the core shifts east toward the four corners and southern Rockies by next weekend. Very hot temperatures will transition to increasing monsoon moisture as it does.
For Wednesday, it will continue to be very hot with temperatures around 105 degrees in the hottest valleys and generally over 100 degrees for valleys below 5,000 feet. Even Sierra Valleys will be pushing 90 degrees. Given that there will be 2-3 days of hot daytimes along with warm overnights in the lower elevations, confidence is increasing that headlines for heat will be necessary, especially across the Basin and Range.
Temperatures will begin to moderate Thursday and Friday as monsoon moisture pushes north, although temperatures are still going to be pushing close to 100 degrees for western Nevada valleys.
