Carson City fitness centers, gyms re-open with new mandated safety measurements in place

Under Phase 2 people are once again able to enjoy working out somewhere other than their living rooms with the re-opening of gyms and fitness centers, and gym owners are stepping up social distancing measures to make sure everyone stays healthy.

According to Steve Main, Partner of Carson City’s Fitness for 10 located on 829 Fairview Dr., they’re taking safety measures very seriously, as are their clients.

“These are health conscious people, and this is one of the safest places you can go in town,” said Main. “Even before we got shut down people were social distancing here. I’m very proud of our members.”

Main and Fitness for 10 staff have placed plastic over every other machine in the facility to make sure that no one is exercising next to each other, and they’re currently staying under 50 percent capacity.

In addition, there are arrows on the floor to make sure that people are going in one direction only through each aisle, and they have increased the amount of disinfectant bottles within the facility.

“We pretty much have one on every machine,” said Main. “There are also bottles at the front desk that people can carry around with them.”

The kids club is currently shut down, but instead of laying off kids club employees, they have instead been set to the new task of cleaning and disinfecting 24 hours a day, according to Main.

So far, both staff and clients have all made sure to take the measures seriously.

“Everyone is being vigilant and disciplined,” said Main. “It’s a new habit for people to get in, but they’re getting it.”

While Carson City CrossFit, located at 403 Hot Springs Rd., may be smaller than Fitness for 10, Owner Leif Larson said they are sticking to very similar safety arrangements.

According to Larson, they are operating under a 50 percent capacity and each CrossFit station has been taped off 10 feet apart to make sure people are actively social distancing.

“Everyone has to either sanitize or wash their hands when they walk in,” said Larson. “There are no overlapping classes and our staff wipes down all door handles and places of contact between classes.”

Larson is also keeping his staff safe by only having one employee at a time within the gym, who serves between 6 to 9 clients.

In addition, there are spaces set up for clients of a sensitive population, where they can either work out outside or in a space up front, and staff members will bring the equipment to them.

“We’re wiping everything down and making sure no one is touching anything before washing their hands,” said Larson. “We have a pretty open floor plan, so no one is within ten feet when they’re working out.”

Recreational facilities run by Carson City’s Parks and Recreation have also reopened under Phase 2 guidelines, including the Multipurpose Athletic Center (MAC) and the Carson City Aquatic Center.

The Aquatic Center, located on 841 N. Roop St., reopened on June 8 with limited pool openings. The main 50-meter pool is open for lap swimming, while the tot pool and outside pool are still closed. The therapy pool, however, is open for a maximum of 8 people per pool.

Lane swimming can be reserved at www.carson.org/ccpr or in person. The limit is one person per lane, or three people per lane so long as they come from the same household.

The MAC, located at 1860 Russell Way, is following similar guidelines, with reservations for pickelball and basketball.

Four people will be allowed on each pickleball court, and three people on each basketball half court. Ten or less people may use the walking track at any given time.

People must bring their own pickleball or basketball equipment at this time, and rotations will not be permitted.

To rent the basketball court or pickleball court, you can make reservations online at www.carson.org/ccpr or in person during business hours. Pickleball court rentals are $12 and basketball court rentals are $9.
