Carson City man jailed on suspicion of fourth DUI
A Carson City man was arrested Thursday in a pharmacy parking lot on suspicion of felony DUI, that, if convicted would be his fourth, a Carson City sheriff’s sergeant said.
Marco Mendez, also faces six misdemeanor charges, including improper display of license plates, driving an unregistered vehicle, no insurance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving without a valid license and violation of a suspended sentence. His bail has been set at $23,210.
According to the arrest report, a sergeant with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team was traveling eastbound on Highway 50 at 8:07 p.m. when he observed a vehicle traveling westbound without a front license plate attached.
The officer followed the vehicle as it turned north on Airport Road from Highway 50. Then vehicle then made a turn into the parking lot of a pharmacy in the 3200 block of Highway 50 East.
The car attempted to turn left into a parking spot and swerved but then continued east again before turning into a marked parking stall that was marked for vehicles traveling west. The vehicle was not parked correctly inside the marking. The officer activated his emergency lights and made contact with Mendez.
As the officer was walking up to the car, the driver was pushing something down with his right hand. The officer asked the man what he was doing and the man stated nothing, the arrest report states.
The officer told Mendez the reason for the traffic stop. The man said he had just purchased the vehicle and was driving it home. The officer asked the man why he pulled into the pharmacy and he didn’t reply. He said he didn’t have a driver’s license and produced a Nevada ID card and a Nevada Department of Corrections inmate card.
He produced a pink slip that was signed but not dated and an insurance card that was no longer valid. Dispatch advised the plates were surrendered. The officer asked the man to step out of the vehicle and then asked him if there was anything illegal on him. The man quickly emptied out his pockets without prompting, turning them inside out. He then turned around a couple times and seemed to not be able to follow directions and kept putting his hands in his pockets. He allowed the officer to search him for weapons and admitted to smoking methamphetamine approximately 2 hours prior, the arrest report states.
Dispatch advised that Mendez is on Alternative Sentencing. The man was arrested and taken to jail where the sergeant and another officer conducted standardized field sobriety tests. The tests showed signs of impairment, the arrest report states. He agreed to complete a blood test.
