Dozens turn out for nationwide Second Amendment rally at Nevada Capitol
For the second straight weekend, gun rights supporters rallied at the Nevada Capitol in downtown Carson City to voice their support for Second Amendment freedom.
Saturday's event, which culminated in a rally at the Capitol Plaza along North Carson Street, began with a morning march from Mills Park, stopping along the way to show respect at military and law enforcement memorials.
Dozens of pro-Second Amendment demonstrators then gathered on the Capitol grounds, waving to cars passing by on North Carson Street with American and Gadsden ("Don't Tread On Me") flags, as well as signs conveying their message of preserving gun ownership rights.
"I came out to stand up for my God-given right to hold my arms," said Dayton resident Nicole Gilbert, a Carson City native. "This is how I've always felt my whole life."
Gilbert said she heard about Saturday's nationwide rally at the Capitol through Battle Born Ammunition and Firearms in Carson City.
Other demonstrators were taking occasion to send a message to gun control advocates, who have staged numerous protests across the country following the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, that claimed 17 lives.
"I wanted to counter protest against all of those protesting for gun control and have the gun rights perspective here," said Greg Ross, who drove down from his home in Reno to participate in Saturday's rally. "I was hoping we'd have a good turn out here and show that there are a lot of people in favor of gun rights."
Around a hundred people, including families, were gathered at the rally where many participants open-carried their firearms in a show of support for gun ownership rights.
Ross said the rally was announced via the internet by Nevada Shooters Forum.
A megaphone was being passed around so participants could speak on the Second Amendment and other matters during Saturday's rally.
Demonstrators primarily voiced their support for the Second Amendment, one of the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution known as the Bill of Rights, and the gun ownership rights that it guarantees.
The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits Congress from infringing upon the people's right to keep and bear arms.
Saturday's demonstration at the Nevada State Capitol was organized locally by the Carson City Freedom Fighters Facebook group. The event was part of a nationwide effort, promoted by the National Constitutional Coalition of Patriotic Americans, to organize rallies in each state capital across the country.
