Vietnam veterans to be honored Saturday at Carson City ceremony in Mills Park
American military veterans, families, friends and the community are invited to the Vietnam Veterans Day of Remembrance ceremony this Saturday at Mills Park in Carson City.
This annual event begins at 5 p.m. and will be held at the Nevada Vietnam Veterans Memorial located on the east end of the park. The program is presented by the Carson Area Chapter 388 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.
The program will feature a Color Guard and remarks by members of the chapter and Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell, a Vietnam War and U.S. Navy veteran. Earlier Saturday there will be a Vietnam War Veterans Remembrance Day & All Veterans Luncheon at the Reno Event Center. Go here for details.
Between 1965 and 1973, more than 58,000 service men and women were killed in Vietnam, while over 1,600 were listed as missing in action, according to the National Archives.
Nevada suffered 151 casualties during the Vietnam War. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the Nevada Vietnam War Memorial at Mills Park.
American involvement in Southeast Asia — and Vietnam, in particular — lasted nearly 20 years, from the late 1950s until 1975 when the last American civilians were airlifted out of Saigon in April 1975.
