Carson City hosts Thursday meeting ahead of massive downtown construction launch
Ahead of the $11.4 million downtown Carson City reconstruction project slated to begin this month, there will be a “Pre-Construction” meeting Thursday in the Ormsby Room of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, according to planners and Public Works.
The event will be to discuss the construction process and schedule. It begins at 3 p.m. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is at 911 East Musser Street. The meeting, hosted by Q&D Construction and Public Works, is ahead of the Monday, March 7 groundbreaking of the downtown corridor project. The groundbreaking will be 11 a.m. at the corner of Third and Carson Street.
According to city transportation officials earlier this year, the reconstruction of Carson Street in the downtown corridor will go forward as planned beginning this month through November.
The Carson Street improvements are to be paid with the one-eighth-percent sales tax adopted in April 2014. With that funding stream, the city was able to take advantage of historically low interest rates and issued $13,600,000 in bonds to pay for the Downtown Corridor, the Athletic Center and the Animal Shelter.
The one-eighth-percent sales tax costs a household $12.50 for every $10,000 in taxable purchases. It is estimated that approximately 40 percent of all sales tax revenues is paid by non-Carson City residents. Water and sewer lines in Carson Street — which are more than 50 years old and overdue for replacement — will be replaced using Utility funds that are budgeted for such projects, said City Engineering Manager Danny Rotter.
The city’s approved plan will add limited parking spaces along the downtown Carson Street corridor that will be easier to get in and out of than the original plans, which called for a larger number of parallel spaces that would have created more traffic concerns.
The master plan for the downtown corridor will also widen sidewalks to as much as 20 feet and reduce the distance needed for pedestrians to cross the street from 65 feet down to 40 feet.
Construction for downtown corridor improvement will take place between William to Fifth streets. Alternative routes to avoid construction include Roop, Stewart and Division streets. However, Carson Street will still remain open to traffic even with the construction, which is good news for the businesses along the downtown corridor, said Carson City Transportation Manager Patrick Pittenger.
The total cost of the Downtown Streetscape Improvement Project is $11,395,953. This total encompasses aesthetic and utility improvements being made to Carson Street, Third Street and Curry Street. For more information go to CarsonProud.com.
Here is a news release received Tuesday afternoon regarding the Monday groundbreaking ceremony.
Carson City Public Works Department is pleased to announce it will be breaking ground on construction of the Downtown Corridor improvement project on March 7, 2016 at 11 a.m. Attending the ceremony will be Carson City Public Works officials, the City Board of Supervisors, and representatives from Q&D construction. The ceremony will take place on 3rd street in Carson City near the Firkin and Fox.
“We’re incredibly excited to get this project underway,” said Nick Marano, City Manager. “It’s been a long time coming and we’re lucky to have such a great team working on this. Upon completion I think the downtown corridor will be something we can all be proud of.”
Speakers at the ground breaking will include Carson City Mayor, Robert Crowell and Jeff Bean of Q&D Construction. Details about construction, including a live construction map can be found online at www.carsonproud.com.
The Downtown Streetscape project is one of the capital improvement projects approved by the city and is estimated to cost approximately $10-11 million and funded from a 1/8th cent sales tax increase and Public Works funding. Design for Curry Street improvements and a pedestrian plaza on Third Street are included in the design contract, though construction of the Curry Street improvements will come two years after the Carson Street and Third Street improvements.
