Ronald McDonald House receives furnace, thermostat donations

Four new heating, ventilating and air conditioning, furnaces and four programmable thermostats with sensors were installed at a reduced cost at Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern Nevada, a Reno non-profit that serves as a “home-away-from-home” for families with children in area hospitals.

Sierra Air, Inc., Carrier Corporation and Sigler Wholesale Distributors coordinated the procurement, transportation and installation of the energy-efficient components, providing approximately $23,209 of cost savings in equipment, material and labor.

The furnaces were installed in early October and translate to reduced operating costs for the Reno Ronald McDonald House® due to their energy efficient capabilities. They join the Reno House’s solar panel installation, completed in 2010 with a grant from NV Energy, and reflect the House’s attempt to move toward more sustainable operations.

“We actively seek community partners who will benefit from a longstanding relationship with Sierra Air and our respective corporate connections,” said Ron Ford, president of Sierra Air, Inc. “The Ronald McDonald House was looking for ways to use donor dollars more efficiently while providing a calm environment for their guests and we were in a position to help. It seemed the right thing to do for our community.”

Altogether, the installation, which included two exhaust vents in the House’s dual kitchen, would have cost more than $28,000. Carrier Corporation procured the reduced price of the four furnaces, Sigler Wholesale Distributors supplied the units (transported then by Carrier Corporation), and all components, including the accompanying programmable thermostats and sensors, were installed by Sierra Air, Inc.

“Three generous companies came together because they believe in our mission: keeping families together when everything else seems to be unraveling,” said Marty Ozer, executive director for RMHC® Northern Nevada. “Because of their generosity, we can re-allocate a portion of funds that would have otherwise been spent on energy to the most important work we do, which is enabling parents to be with their child at a very scary time in their lives.”
