It looks like winter driving conditions are finally here. We are expected to have blizzard like conditions in and around Carson City for the rest of the week. Carson City Sheriff’s Office encourages drivers to be responsible and exercise caution while driving.

I am writing today to vehemently oppose the removal of flashing lights on the highway that inform drivers a light is about to change.

The general consensus of our community with whom I've spoken to seem to agree that this would be a disaster.

The prevailing belief amongst leaders of nine nuclear powers is that Weapons of Mass Destruction are a deterrent. So far so good. However, there is also a belief simmering in the minds of a few revanchists, that WMDs might be useful in exacting retaliation or retribution for various grievances.

MINDEN, Nev. — The Nevada COVID Task Force notified Douglas County that they are flagged for elevated COVID-19 disease transmission. Douglas County saw a spike in infection rates back in July, but then numbers declined for several months.

The Nevada COVID Task Force has notified Lyon County that they are to remain flagged for elevated COVID test positivity rates. October 12, 2020 Lyon County saw a test positivity of 8.2 percent and has experienced an increase week after week since then. As of Monday, Lyon County sits at a rate of 19.0 percent.

Updates and changes to school zones have arrived in the Carson City area.

School zones for Bordewich Bray, Carson Middle, Carson High, Eagle Valley, Empire, Fremont, Fritsch, Mark Twain, Pioneer High and Seeliger have been extended from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The installation of new signs and updated times is expected to be completed by the second week of October, 2020.

The Carson City Sheriffs Office is joining forces with other Nevada Law Enforcement Agencies to stop drunk drivers and drivers under the influence of drugs. Officers will be out in force from Sept. 3-13, 2020.

According to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, an accidental misfire of a rifle occurred today at around 5 p.m. in front of the Nevada State Legislature in Carson City following a Black Lives Matter rally.

UPDATE 2:30PM: There's an 8-vehicle pileup on Highway 50 West Spooner in the eastbound lane below Golf Club Drive. No injuries were reported. Another spinout related crash was reported near the pileup, also in the eastbound lane. Motorists are advised not to drive up the hill due to slick conditions.

UPDATE 2:15PM: Carson City Sheriff's dispatch reports multiple fender bender accidents around town as well as along Highway 50 West and East. Motorists are urged to slow down due to conditions. Sanders and plows have been dispatched to heavily traveled areas.

A strong system moving into the region Thursday has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Storm Warning for Lake Tahoe and Sierra and a Winter Weather Advisory for the Carson City region.

With 2019 now at a close and all of the final reports in for the period all the way through the New Year Eve celebrations, it’s time for a summary look back for everyone to see.

Carson City sheriff's deputies responded late Monday afternoon to two separate vehicle crashes in the area of College Parkway and Emerson.

The first big snow storm of the winter season arrived overnight and into Wednesday morning bringing snow to the valley floor and Sierra, causing travel headaches for many Thanksgiving holiday motorists with any number of accidents, fender benders and spinouts.

UPDATE 6:58PM: NHP responded to two separate vehicle accidents in the area of Highway 395 and Stephanie Way in Douglas County early Thursday evening. No serious injuries were reported in the crashes. Northbound traffic flow has resumed.

The Nevada Highway Patrol and emergency crews from East Fork Fire and Carson City were called early Thursday evening to a traffic accident in the northbound lane of Highway 395 near Stephanie Way in Johnson Lane area of Douglas County.

The hotly debated proposed Stewart Street and Carson Street roundabout is in its final design phase according to Carson City via its website Carson Proud, and was presented to the the Redevelopment Authority Citizens Committee, which helped fund the project, during a meeting held Monday.

"This is a major milestone for the project team and one more step toward the start of the construction stage scheduled to begin (by) the end of the year," said the website.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Wednesday morning to two vehicle accidents. One on North Carson Street and the other in the area of Emerson and Arrowhead.

Northern Nevada's biggest blood bank has put a call out for donors, noting that it is expecting a significant shortfall of blood donations going into the July 4 holiday period.

Fire season is upon us, and while the high temperatures may have come a little late this year, the wet winter and cool temperatures also created a perfect growing situation for fast acting fuels such as cheat grass.

CARSON CITY — One Army Reservist was killed and four Nevada Army National Guardsmen were injured in a military vehicle rollover accident during training early Wednesday morning at the Joint Readiness Training Center in Fort Polk, Louisiana, according to a Nevada State Public Affairs Officer for the Nevada National Guard.

Lyon County Sheriff's Office deputies, Central Lyon County Fire and the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to vehicle accidents late Wednesday afternoon on Highway 50.

Design plans for a roundabout at the intersection of Stewart Street and South Carson Street as part of the South Carson Complete Streets Project will be available for review at a public workshop Friday.

CARSON CITY — Terry Kerns, substance abuse and law enforcement coordinator with the Nevada Office of the Attorney General, spoke at Carson High School on Thursday morning to more than 300 freshmen about the opioid crisis facing Nevada and the science of addiction. She will offer the same presentation again tomorrow to the remaining 300 freshmen on the same topics.
