Keep flashing warning lights on our highways! (Letter)
This is a response to the following article originally posted here on Carson Now:
I am writing today to vehemently oppose the removal of flashing lights on the highway that inform drivers a light is about to change.
The general consensus of our community with whom I've spoken to seem to agree that this would be a disaster.
With high speed limits on the highways, (and some people going well above the limit) drivers need that advanced warning to slow down.
Now we'll have even more red light runners or rear end accidents (and possible pile ups) from drivers with not enough warning to slow down from a speed of 55-65mph to 0mph.
People slamming on their brakes to make a red light and getting hit by the car(s) behind them. Drivers speeding up to get through the light because there's not enough warning to slow down for the red.
I have always considered these warning lights one of the most innovative safety features on our local highways. With more people moving here and more congested traffic this seems like the worst possible decision NDOT could make.
I have been searching my brain to find one single positive reason for this decision. I have come up empty.
Please reconsider this decision to keep our residents, families and children safe.
I have started a petition to give our community members a voice to oppose this decision.
